Reviving the 79 F150

With the factory original 302 warn out, we ended up going to the local pull a part and snagged a 5.0 out of a 99 Mercury Mountaineer. The motor only had 150k on it! We ordered a carb, intake, Mallory distributor, and a few other accessories.

I didn't have any help removing the hood so I ended up using the engine lift and a hook connected to the hood latch. After unbolting and walking the hood to the front of the engine it was easily moved outside and cleaned with purple power.

A little rust and 30 plus years of road grime

Its amazing what some purple power and a hose will do for an engine bay.

After a wire wheel and what felt like an hour later (probably 15 mins) the new 302 is red!

Out with the old and in with the new!

Thanks! Everything is set in place but I still need to tie up some lose ends before we test drive.

Next on the list swapping out the old c6 for an M5OD. I plan on reinforcing the firewall and adding a hydraulic clutch with a stage II clutch in the next few weeks.

Believe it or not the stock oil pan has plenty of room! I was a little worried when I first dropped it in. I will post a picture of the clearance later. Same with the fly wheel. We even used the starter from the parts truck. It's amazing the weight difference between the oem from the 70s and oem from the 90s!

Not sure if it will work but here's a quick video

Here are a few shots of the oil pan in the truck. It originally came from an AWD So it has pretty good clearance. You can see the orange on the balancer. Currently waiting in it to dry so I can sand it off and have orange timing marks!

Looks good glad you used the newer flywheel. The old 302 80 and older where 28 oz. the 80 and newer are 50 oz.

Yeah, I ran into that issue when a customer ordered a bunch or parts for his 66 mustang. Man that thing shook like crazy!

Alright. After knocking out a few more customers cars, we are back on the 79!! I ended up cutting apart the O.E Power steering hose from the 99 motor and put the end from the 79 P.S. box side in place. Once all that was in place, it was time for the transmission swap. I found a M5OD at the local pull a part for $75 and couldnt pass it up! unfortunately the custom exhaust was in the way and I ended up having to remove the H pipe. I have the clutch and flywheel are in place. Just need to cut the hole in the floor and shes in for good!!

On lunch today I went a head and swapped out the warn bushing on the M5OD shifter. I ordered the kit on amazon and was here the next day! Not bad for $13 shipped. Ended up being an easy replacement, took about 5 mins total.

Tools I used were

T25 torx
1/4 ratchet
Hammer and punch

You can see how the old bushing turned to dust. I imagine shifting was an issuse with this trans in its previous life
