Buying then building a 6.0

Hey guys I'm back, I found I found the truck for me well I think. It's a 2006 6.0 250 that is already bulletproofed. Truck has 200k miles though and was wondering after it's been bulletproofed would it still be okay to start building it with that many miles on it already? Just asking for any opinions

I would think IF it's been kept up well (oil changes etc. and repairs) it's probably good for another 100k mi or likely even more. Plenty of miles to get some fun out of it. If you want to know for sure or have some doubts about it, compression, leak down, and cylinder balance checks could give you a good idea of its condition without the work or expense of a major tear down.

as rusty said, how well the truck has been maintained plays a huge role. The 6.0 can go nearly as far as the trusty ol' 7.3 in the right hands, but poor maintenance can kill them in a hurry.

another test, as a quick and easy preliminary check, is a simple blowby test. Unlike the 7.3, it is NOT normal to see some blowby. You should see very little to no white "smoke" when doing the simple oil cap blowby test on a 6.0.

just out of curiosity, what kind of power are you looking to make?

edit: there are also other things you want to check with a OBD2 device, such as a scangauge 2 or torque pro with an android device and a bluetooth OBD adaptor. you want to check oil/coolant temp delta, FICM voltage, IPR, ICP and VGT position.

with either you are BUYING a pig in a poke. Everything can be 'fixed' but it could be just another tale of things are all OK. You need to determine what you can afford to repair in the event ANYTHING goes bad after purchase. Dont plan on taking someones word (particularly if unknown to you) and going out and building a hot rod. We bought a 'clean' chevy bel aire one time, 'newly overhauled' engine smoke from 'chrome rings installed'. Engine had been painted looked good, vehicle in general in good shape, must been filled with STP or something as it just quit a week or so later! Traded it in on a newer vehicle from dealer towed it about 1/4 mile from dealer started up ran it in cold all was fine got a whoppin $200 for it.

So just remember that unless you actually know what has been done, that it is a PIG IN A POKE and buyer beware.

I have an 03 F250 6.0 CC SB XLT Fx4 and when you talk about bulletproofing, I live only 11 miles from Bulletproof Diesel.

Back in 2010 I was already using BPD for all my maintenance and just for the heck of it I had them run a bubble test, and it indicated that I had a leaking head gasket. I had already decided that if it ever came down to it I was keeping the truck and going all in with whatever BPD recommended since I had the money and you cant find a better 6.0 shop anywhere.

Today the truck has an additional 45,000 mostly trouble free miles on it since the cab off rebuild. the only problem was the #3 injector had to be replaced and you are going to get that once in a while, no matter how well you maintain the oil and I am OCD about maintenance. All of my mods are in a block at the end of this.

I run a tune, but do not beat on the truck as it is my tow rig, but it is very fun to drive and not overly smokey. I would be amazed if this truck does not last me the rest of my life at the current rate that I am accumulating miles. It only has 106,000 now and when it breaks I'll fix it, when it needs paint I'll paint it, etc... I do absolutely recommend BPD's full line of products and upgrades and I have them all.

If I ever need another truck I will keep an eye out for a killer deal on a used 6.0 and take it straight to them for upgrades and would feel confident that I have a reliable truck.

BTW, I know a lot of guys (including me) that keeps every receipt for anything that was ever done to their trucks. When buying used ask for receipts and maintenance records. I know I would be tickled pink to show mine if I was selling and someone asked. I would bet that most single owner trucks are better maintained than those that have passed from hand to hand.
