Ambient temperature readings (just curious)

My console display usually coincides pretty closely with what the weather report tells me the temps are. OBD II PID 46, displayed via an UltraGauge, always displays temps about 3-5 degrees cooler than the console display. Can anyone explain to me the difference in how ambient temperatures are calculated by the console display vs OBD II PID 46 (ambient temperature)?

My guess is that the console temp display is coming from the ambient air temp sensor outside the vehicle while PID 46 is coming from an IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor in the intake tract. Hopefully an expert will come along to verify if this is true on the 2011.

Intake air temp is PID 0F.

I use the now discontinued MSD dashawk and they are separate sensors. Once on the road, the IAT and OAT are within one degree. Air is pulled in by the left front fender and since its they are about he same, no reason to go with a cold air intake. If I select the OAT on the dashawk, it is the same as the temperature displayed on the dashboard.

Interesting. Do you have automatic climate control? Someone on another forum stated that with manual HVAC these numbers are the same, but with an automatic system one is taken directly from the sensor and the other is calculated.

Well I was just curious. It was nothing vital.

My 2007 Navigator with Auto Climate Control: The thermocouple for it's temperature display is located on the right side behind the grille near the headlight. It always sends a higher reading until the car starts moving. It takes a 5 or 10 minutes to correct itself.
