1960 F100 4x4 Transfer Case Color

Good evening,

I am in the midst of a frame off restoration of my 1960 F100 4x4. Does anyone know what color the transfer case would have been from the factory?

Thank you!

PS, I uploaded some pictures, I hope they make it into the feed.

WOW love your project! My transfer case was black when I bought the truck in 1970, pretty sure it was untouched at that point. I bought it from the son of the owner.
Please keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you Teddy! I was thinking it was black but have not see a photo of a new or un-
restored transfer case.

It has been a fun/challenging project so far. 80 hours of sandblasting on the frame, then two coats of epoxy and two coats of finish. Turned out really sharp though and starting to build it back up.

Undoubtedly more questions will follow

Thank you for getting back to me. It is great to have the resources of this forum!!

Have a good one and love the pictures of your truck!

Don

Going back a few years, I bought a 1960 F100 4x4 in 1974 from the original owner. Transmission and transfer case had no paint, just light rust on the cast iron covered by years of oil and grease. Same on the 59 F250 and 60 F100 I have now. Back then it was common for transmissions and transfer cases in cast iron were shipped to the assembly plant with a coating such as a light rust preventive or a "shipping paint" that would oxidize or flake off in a short time. The only parts I have seen painted were sheet metal covers covering the PTO openings.

I wondered if they were not painted from the factory as well? I just finished my third round of oven cleaner and pressure washing and I can see now that there is some black paint left but don't know its originality. It is a Spicer 24 transfer case. Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it.

Just purchased a 1960 F100 4x4. My transfer case is covered in surface rust, but very solid. Did you find out the color? And how is the rebuilding coming along. We've just disassembled ours and are fighting rust.

Mechanical parts that you couldn't see when the hood was raised on new car/truck dealers lots were not painted. The engines were painted, but that was about it.

1960/65: The engines were painted black, the valve covers were painted specific colors, because this was how FoMoCo identified engine sizes for garages and body shops.

At some point in the very distant past, my transfer case was black (with paint). From that point onward it became covered with an incredibly thick layer of road grime / tar, which took an incredible amount of time to remove. It's now black again.
