I have a 2000 F150 4x4 that I need to get some new tires for my 17" rims. It is not lifted and I am not planning on lifting it. 85% of the driving I do is on pavement, and of the 15% that is off pavement, 14.5% is on dry dirt or fire roads. What I would like to get advice on is which brand (and model) tires have you had success with? What would you recommend? I am looking for something 31" or 33" (by the way, will 33" clear on a stock suspension?) Thanks for your help.
33's are really close on a stock suspension but I've seen lots of new model Fords w/ 285 75-16's on them. This is basically the same as a 33x10.50-16. I believe a 275 70-17 will do the job nicely. This is the standard tire size put on the Dodge Ram off-roads. Their like 32" tall and like 9.5-10" wide. You could buy a 33x12.50-17 but your rims may be too narrow to properly mount those tires on. Your stock 265 70-17's are rougly 31" so if that's all the taller you want go w/ a stock replacement size.
As far as tires go. Just about anything will do well on dirt roads, as long as they aren't too muddy when it rains. I've known people who've had good luck w/ the Dunlop Radial Rover AT. Their a 50k mi tire with a mild-aggressive all terrain patern. They have a more open tread pattern than the Goodyears that were orig. equipt. on your truck. They look pretty good and are most likely alot cheaper than Goodyears.
For the kind of driving you do, you should check out the Michelin LTX M/S (not the LTX A/T). I put a set on my '85 Bronco, and they were far superior to the BFG A/T's that were on it. Quiet on the street, best wet-pavement truck tire you can buy, and when I did go on the same kind of dirt/logging roads you are talking about, they did just as well as the BFG's. I now have a set of Big O Big Foot A/T's on my truck, and they are doing really well so far. I'd recommend them too, but I"m not sure what sizes they have in 17"
