Exclamation 1993 F350 4x4 Rear Disc Brake Conversion

Anyone have any advice on converting the drum brakes on a 1993 F350 D60 to Disc Brakes? I don't want to use the cheaper version of the cable pull calipers from the GM. I would like to have active rear disc working with the front system.

Um, are you thinking the GM(yuk) brake calipers are activated by a cable?

No, they are hydraulic. The cable lever is for the parking brake function.

As far as conversion, are you doing this for looks or increased braking? The minimal gain in braking will not be worth the money and time invested in this conversion. Most of your braking power comes from the front brakes. The back brakes don't do much (10 to 20% at most) except keep you lined up during a hard panic stop.

I did this conversion to a '73 International 1010, adding discs off the front of Ford Ranger and those GM calipers. It was a bear, since a kit wasn't out at that time. Increase in braking? Negligible. Had to change out the Master Cylinder, had to try four of them to find one that worked good with the conversion. Wasn't worth it.

I would just have the drums turned, buy some premium shoes and call it a day. Much cheaper and easy to fix on a trip. I have observed first hand the failure(!) of a caliper bracket on a converted '96 F250. Try to fix that on a Sunday evening, out in some small rural town. We couldn't.

Just sayin', since you need skills and possibly access to a good machine shop to do a conversion like this. I'm not sure you will find a true "bolt-on" kit that requires nothing but hand tools to accomplish.

My $0.02 USD worth. Maybe others will chime in with their experiences.

This gets asked pretty often here. Do a search and you'll find what's been said before. Here is the most recent thread (from all of 4 days ago) https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...disc-swap.html

No I don't want the GM, its just what I was reading about. "indeed YUK" I want a nice simple kit that will look nice. This is purely for looks and not to increase the stopping power of the truck. I appreciate your feedback.

There is lots of space between the spokes on those 22 inch wagon wheels kids are putting on their cars these days.

you don't have a dana 60 in the back, you have a dana 60 in the front, the rear axle is a sterling 10.25.

I converted mine about 2 months ago. I haven't looked back since. Stopping power is night and day over the stock drum setup. New rotors front and back with ceramic pads and my truck can stop on a dime now no problem. I used ruff stuff specialties kit and it bolted on no problems in about 2-3 hours time including pulling out axles, installing new Scotseal XL hubs, flaring brake lines and topping off gear oil.
Kit is $396 shipped to your door
then you need:
Brake line fittings 2 3/16" $5.00
Hub socket if needed $25 amazon
Scotseal XL rear hub seals $45 Napa, got mine on ebay $25 ea
Brake fluid $10
1 can of paint to paint calipers and brackets
grade 8 hardware to bolt up brackets $15-20 at lowes

Some say 94 + axles need to have caliper bracket backspaced 1/4"
mine is a 92 and it had to be spaced so just check before all done.

I don't mind drums, but it is nice to have a solid pedal that doesn't rely on the adjusters.

right now I don't have it hooked up, but you can get it to work with el dorado calipers from the 70's. I never use mine so its not a concern to me.
Pedal is nice and firm always, stops on a dime and easier to service.

One of the very few that I've seen say you love it everyone else says either it won't work or don't do it

Did you use a proportioning valve for the rear or just hook the kit up and go

Got my kit sitting in the garage waiting for me to have some time
