Great addition, Ken!

When I finally find time to finish updating the tech folder, this will for sure be added!

Ken how tall are them lights ??
Because after reading your write up and thinking about it I'm going to get a few of them KC lights for my underhood. I am thinking of also putting one under the cowl.
Do you think if you put one underside of cowl over the turbo it would be too hot?
Thanks again for sharing this with us!

They are roughly 1/2" tall. 0.530: per the spec.

FWIW, I found a 10W LED floodlight on ebay here for $1.38 shipped. Looks like it'll take a little rigging (gotta make a housing of some sort) but you can't beat the price!

There is a certain precision and attention to detail that is the hallmark of just about everything that Ken (Woodnthings) does that is delightful. This craftsmanship is not only self evident in the content of his write ups, but also in the presentation. Ken, your contributions are more deserving than mere reps can reward... they merit real and genuine compliments on your style.

List, schmist... mine are in a brown truck - along with parts to replace my battery clamps with the military style.

Thanks for the kind words. I really do enjoy working on and modding our trucks. I'm just happy to share the "how too" parts and am grateful for all of those who have done the same for me.

This is what I did. I used 8, 3/4" LED's and ran them to a toggle switch you can see next to the drivers side hinge. I originally bought 20 of them to put under the hood but I think 8 is plenty.

Uber-Geek enters the room....

I had a pair of KC HiLites Cyclone 1350s sitting on the bench, right next to my box of 12VDC power supplies and across from drawer with the Wago quick-taps. My shop at work has no windows, so I figured "Let's see what these bad boys can do".

No outside light, iPhony 4 camera with no flash.

Geek stuff: After this little test, I grabbed a 12VDC 1 amp power supply and hooked it up to the two lights. Once the halo-shaped sunburns on my retinas ebbed, I looked at the specs on the old anemic under-hood bulb

912 bulb:
1 amp
150 lumens

One of these KC HiLites:
0.4 amp
1100 lumens.

Over 7 times more light with less than half the amps - but 25 times the price. Still - I wanna see in there at night (and daytime), and dragging lamps and cords around gets old.

The more I look at these lights the more I dig them. I was hoping one of you guys might what the difference is between the 1350/ clear and the 1351/ defused is ? What would the benefit of a defused clear?

IIRC one is a frosted type clear and the other is clear see through

@7.3Excursion4X4: does not having the factory heat blanket thing under the hood effect anything? I'm trying to decide if I should replace mine or just toss it as mine is very tatty and I hate when things look all tatty and bad
