64 Body trim and grill opinion please
Hey guys,
My truck has the original trim and grill, however like all or most original trim it has the patina, faded look, but again, original. SO I was out messing in the garage and took an SMALL area on the grill and actually wet sanded a spot and polished it up. I was very happy in the way that it looked. Would have taken a pic but is a very small area right now. So the boss (wife) came out and looked at it and said WHY?? and leave it alone because it is original.
YEA, about the wife, let me explain, this is a joint venture for both of us so there are some things that I need to OPEN my mind to, and some I just let it go and do what I feel is right.
The truck is not original color and the drive train is not original, but everything else is original.
SO my question and asking for opinions. Do it all and make it look, well, I think, nice and clean, shinny, or give in and leave it alone? I don't think it would de-value the truck. Still will be original trim and grill...I don't think it will cause any issues with the trim and grill, just keep it polished?
As always guys, like to ask here on FTE, for this is what we all do.
Look forward to your comments, opinions!

The trim and grille are aluminum (I'm assuming aluminum based on what you typed) and have an anodized coating on them. While you did a small area by wet sanding, I'm not sure you got the anodize off. You may have, anyway the anodize coating needs to come off in order to repair dings, dents and polish. For a DIY person this can be very time consuming.
In the end your grille can look like the one below.
Well, maybe not like this but if you work on it long enough, it can.

GANGSTAKR, Hey, every time i see your truck on here. wow sure is a nice ride. IS that grill new or original and you reworked it all?
Yes the aluminum trim, grill. I understand the 64 trim is no longer produced and very hard to get..?
I have read ALOT about cleaning the anodizing off the trim and grill, from having it done for $$, to using drain cleaners to remove the anodizing. I was thinking the drain cleaner then read about using wet sanding, fixing dents and sanding some more. Looked like work but did look much better. Yea, have to make sure it is all sanded even and what not and like you said, get it all off. So I am at that cross roads with the truck. I leave it as is, drive it, have some fun with it or have to think about going over the top and tearing it down, repaint, rework all the trim, Rest of it is in good shape. Then you have your life in something you will not get out of it, however, you will have the pride of doing it!
So it is more of a, is it worth it with the way the truck is now, or just let it stay as is and the boss gets her way..lol.
thanks much for your comments and look forward to others if they wish to chime in.

Guys,
It is the typical anodized faded look....SO maybe I am being a bit confusing. Lets back up...
I have this truck, it is very clean...However repainted..I am working on the paint, it is a 5 footer...wet sanding buffing due to whom ever painted it caused orange peel.
Does a guy clean all the trim and the grill up, due to it being original or leave it to look original, patina, if you will? WOULD it put doubt in the minds of others that it is NOT original? Here are some pics, not great for it was last night in the garage...

Confusing?? What your asking is a bit confusing. The grille and trim are original right? correct style of trim for the 64, nothing confusing about that.
Would they look better polished? Of course, however, that's a lot of work to do at home.
Who would question authenticity?
By they way I hate the word "Patina" to me it's a lazy mans word. That's just me.
Original, "it is what it is."

I am a newbie to this forum, long time car guy somewhat newly 1964 F100 owner. I like the patina look but it is everywhere. I have little time but I am form over function first and foremost. Get it running, stopping, shifting and all the kinks worked out first. With that said, I like it clean but uniformed. If you got a fresh grill but paint is rough, keep it uniformed or if you like it clean start on one thing at a time. I got my grandfather's 64 stepside and took me two year picking at it to get it right. There will always be something you want to do. We all can't afford to have Dave Kandigit to overhaul our trucks.
Good luck, Anthony

This is exactly the type of answer I was looking for. feedback...thats all i wanted.
I was trying NOT to be confusing, but at times it is how you ask the question, right...
Patina..lol...yea I hear ya on that..original is my way of looking at it as well.
Who would question it,,,a buyer possibly. ?
I have two toys, this truck and a mustang, i plan on putting up both of them for sale at the same time this early summer, which ever one sells first, I keep the other. If mustang sells, I am going to tear this truck apart and have it painted right!
If the truck sells, 485hp is not enough for the stang these days...will drop moneys into more power.
Thanks gangstakr for your support and answer on this.
By the way, did you finish that grill yourself or have it done?
Thanks,
Rob

Thanks,
Rob

Rob:
I understand what you are asking above. In my opinion, originality translates to value if you own a 1957 matching numbers fuel injected Corvette. Not only is the value for originality and "collectability" of our early Ford trucks limited, it is governed more by the esthetic and preference appeal to a potential buyer. In other words...there is no significant collectible value. Make your truck the way you want it to look that gives you the most satisfaction.

Resonatear..Tedster9 ..Great yes, this also is what I was looking for...As this is my first old truck and not sure what is best or a worse case. I think where the wife is coming from, thinking it is worth more not touched then make it pretty. (or she sees $$$ again, hehe) I find it different, make it look pretty, clean and like what you created. We all know, it is only worth what someone will pay for it, OR what is it worth to the individual that is really wanting it. No different then my mustang buying and selling...And to some, our trucks are priceless and no one has enough to drive it away.
Thanks all!

Unless you're very experienced and have a well known reputation, an assembly line type restoration operation, I can't see anybody making a profit restoring old cars. No way. In fact, restored vintage pickups are a good buy. Maybe $10 to $20k (cash) gets a nice rig, turnkey head-turner, with approximately the same fuel mileage as late model foofery. Safety features, not so much. But then, it doesn't cost $1200 everytime the check wallet light goes off and only a dealer can fix it etc.
But they will hold their value relative to inflation. Basically you can have a nice truck "for free" or next to nothing, over the years.
