Front brakes are done! Here are the pics as promised.

Here is the caliper bracket mounted to the spindle. When I painted the parts I masked off the areas where the caliper bolted to the bracket and the back of the bracket where it bolts against the spindle. I wanted metal to metal contact where pieces bolted together instead of paint between.

Here the hub and rotor are on as well as the caliper mount. The two 18mm bolts for the caliper mount torque at 295 ft lbs, My torque wrench will only do 250. so I put a hardened plated flat washer under the head. That should reduce the torque to where I should be close.

Caliper in place.

These are a couple of shots from the back. There is almost enough room to get my hand between the wheel and caliper, these are 19.5" wheels. As the brake pads wear, the caliper will move farther away from the wheel.
Thanks, Mark

Mark, VERY nice work there. Here are the things I think will break before your bracket:

Caliper mounting bolts
Brake(backing plate) mounting flange
King Pins
Axle twisting

Looks like you will never have any trouble stopping!

Why did you use such thick steel for the main caliper mount piece?

Thank You, Jules! I used 1" plate for the mounting bracket. That piece I believe is forged as part of the spindle on the truck these brakes came off of. The ears that the caliper bolts go thru on the original truck are between 1 1/8" and 1 3/16" thick. I probably could have went a little thinner but I would have had to use a spacer on the bolts to make up the difference. As it is I used a hardened washer under the bolts as the ends were almost touching the rotor, now I have a little more than 1/8" clearance.
Thanks again, Mark

Mark,

What a nice job! However, it just doesn't surprise me due to the beautiful work you have done for me. I will echo CaptPayne and show interest for a Marmon Herrington application. By the way, congratulations on getting your engine running.

Nelson, Thank you for the compliments and congratulations. It is good to hear from you! How is you truck coming along? That would be an interesting challenge fitting discs to a M-H axle, but I don't know of an axle here locally that I could work with.

I do not think it would be possible on any of the M&H or Coleman axles I have seen due to the large gimble (U-joint) inside the hub that takes the entire diameter.

Mark, I think I am on the 10 year plan when it comes to my truck, kind of like I was with school. I have been working a great deal so I haven't had time. However, this is my transition year to wean myself off working so much. We'll see how that goes.

Maybe some good pictures of an MH axle would be enough to say the mod is or is not worth a try. Anyway, we can keep the mod in mind when an opportunity to take a look comes up.

It is not impossible it would just be harder. On most of those axles as you probably know the axle is solid to the end/outer most point of the axle and the brake drum hangs off the back and actually swings over the axle tube when you turn.

So you would probably have an adapter that hangs similar to how the backing plate is already done and mount your caliper to that. Then you would probably need a custom/modified caliper as it looks like it has to fit over the king pins you can barely see in the center and then a custom bracket to mount your caliper would need a large diameter mounting bracket. Note in the pic below that the drum cross section an L shape and about 2"x 3" (rough guess)

Nelson, If I were on the 10 year plan with my truck, I would already be behind by a couple of years. I may have been done if I hadn't made so many direction changes. Oh well, I have enjoyed the journey. Post some photos here sometime of your front axle and hubs, maybe we can come up with something that will work for you when the time comes. Do you have the transmission and transfer case in?

Jules, No worries. I posted this thread hopefully to help out the F4-F6 guys with front brake issues like I was dealing with, no parts available. If something here can be modified to help out the 4x4 guys, that would be great too. The more ideas and input the better.
