Tranny options for a 390
I need some help with a restoration of a 69 shortbed, I have a list of options for a motor, the original 360, a 390 super marauder,a built 352,and a 72 460, I am just not sure what to do here. I want to drive it to shows etc. and I want a 4 or 5 speed. any ideas? thanks brian

You might already know this, but Borg-Warner T-18 and T-19 four speeds were common transmission on FEs. You can get them at salvage yards and rebuilt here: The Novak Guide to the Borg-Warner T18 & T19 Transmissions

Salvage yards are also source. Here is a searchable database of salvage yard inventories. Just plug in your location and what you're looking for. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

If you are thinking of the early style that Ford used before the top loader make sure to use the matching bell housing other wise the input shaft will not be long enough. Also make sure it is a wide ratio because close ratio transmissions are real dogs unless you have 4.11 gears. I have been there.

I swapped a T19 from an '85 F250 Diesel into my '68 behind the 360. It originally had an NP435, granny gear first and a huge spread between 3rd and 4th gears which really sucked when towing. The T19 I used has no granny gear, so it's a true 4-speed with synchros on all four gears, and I put a Gear Vendors O/D behind it. It was practically a bolt-in swap as far as the tranny itself.
Of the engine choices you list, I would probably go with the 460. I don't think you'll find much difference in fuel consumption between it and the FEs, as FE engines tend to really like their fuel. Plus, you can get a ZF5 transmission fairly easily that will bolt up to it, among other choices.

Overall, yes. I prefer manual to automatic anyway, and the T19 is much nicer to drive than the NP435 was. As far as the GV O/D goes, my old 360 is pretty tired and if I'm carrying any type of a load I have to keep my foot in it more to maintain speed when in O/D and don't really see any improvement in fuel consumption. For that matter, it seems about the same either in or out of O/D, loaded or empty. I don't think I've ever broken into the 13s on this truck, it's usually about 11-12 mpg.
