In my 95 f350 5.8 at I keep blowing the #4 fuse 15 amp. It's for exterior lamps (running lights) and instrument illumination. Any idea how I should start dealing with this? Don't really want to pull the dash out in the cold weather. Thanks for any info guys!
Fused blow due to excessive amperage draw. Usually due to a short to ground. If you had a short to ground inside the cab I think you would notice an odor or flashing dash lights. Soooo, I would disconnect the "running lights" and install a new 15 amp fuse and see what happens. Have you worked on the running lights lately i.e. new bulbs, additional lights. Does the fuse blow instantly or after a few days?
Most of the time this turns out to be a short in the trailer plug or wiring at the rear of the truck.
So I don't really have any trailer wiring hooked up currently. When I got the truck the wires to the trailer wiring were just cut. So they are still that way but
none of the ends of the wires are touching. They are cut off at the rear of the truck.
If this is happens with the head light switch off (pushed in) then you have a problem with the remote Keyless Entry.
The dash lights don't work at all . And the corner lights and rear lights when I have the headlights on and when half way don't come on. Brake lights and turn signals work
I don't think the headlights are on the same circuit with the dash lights. When you said "running lights" I understood clearance lights. I would check all lights that work with the fuse out. You can eliminate those as the source of the problem. Then install a new fuse and with all switches in the off position see if the fuse blows. Don't use the dome lights and turn the dash lights off. We are trying to isolate the circuit that has the problem. In my experience I always check where the last repairs were made. For example if you have installed a new dome light recently start there. You have a short yo ground or an over sized bulb somewhere in the system. Work on the easy stuff first and it's almost never the wires. Keep looking and testing you will find it.
