Long bed 40gal rail tank fit a short bed truck?

Picked up the 40 gallon tank today.... $60 including the sending unit.
This is a picture of two tanks, one from a 2008 F250 short bed and the other a 2003 F350 long bed.
Now here's the thing, the strap locations are the same distance apart. The long bed tank is deeper and the fill and vent tubes are on the opposite side of what my 29 gallon tank has. The 2008 tank, after some measuring, will slide right in. Harpoon the thing and be done.
But now that the straps are the same location on both tanks, I'm wondering now, can I add a little longer fill hose, cut the metal fill tube back so the angle isn't so sharp, lengthen the strap a little or use a strap from a long bed truck and slide this baby in.
