Six Cylinder Exhaust Manifold Gaskets
Hi -
I am in the process of installing a 300 cid straight six engine in my 1966 Ford F100. I am using an Offenhauser 4-bbl intake manifold with newer factory Ford cast iron dual exhaust manifolds that connect to a Walker WLK-45166 wye exhaust pipe. My question is, do I need some sort of exhaust pipe donut gaskets between the output side of the exhaust manifolds and the Walker pipe?

Thanks for the tip! When I peeked down the Y pipe, I was surprised to see the there was quite a bit of obstruction. The manufacturer just cut a small "mouse hole" in the main exhaust pipe before welding on the section of pipe to make the Y. A few minutes with the Dremel tool took care of it, but I probably would not have even looked without you mentioning it.

I did a lot of looking and could not find just the Y pipe, only Y pipe & cat. IIRC got them thru Rock auto as they were the cheapest I could find.
Where the 2 pipes joined was ok on mine and did not need to open it up.

No they don't as the sealing flange is built into the manifolds as you can see in my pictures.

On my inline 300, I used a pair of '94 ('87-'96) 4.9L EFI exhaust manifolds and got a section of the pipes coming off the exhaust manifolds, back to a few inches past where the O2 sensor screwed in. The remainder of the exhaust was run from there with two separate mufflers and separate exhaust exiting out in front of each rear wheel. --I don't have any gaskets between the exhaust manifolds and the head.

Love these “best practices” threads, especially when it comes to one of our critical program content issues GASKETING. Your personal experience, openly shared on this subject, right here on this Forum and in this thread is appreciated by our team and very important to our quest for excellence/user friendly outcomes.A little History on the origin of the well-known #260 Mr. Gasket is in order. The 260 1-piece fiber composite gasket, for the 240/300 3.9 & 4.9L engines began with its public release in 1972. Way back then, my key contact at Mr Gasket, cultivated while employed by Fomoco in their Motorsports efforts, was Rich Smith. He and other aftermarket manufacturers’ key personnel routinely spoke with yours truly [Bruce Sizemore aka on our Forum as Gramps/ worldchampgramp] to “fetch” and send them genuine Ford factory production blue prints. Whether it was Crane Cams, Edelbrock, Mr. Gasket or others they all found or were directed to “Gramps” the problem solver. ALL of this took place before I was able to campaign my first notable ¼ mile ride the infamous Preparation H Maverick as none of personally could own or even drive a competitive off-road vehicle. This was a NO NO in Ford Motorsports employment and a violation meant your out-of-here.Reason for this background is the 100% accurate statement that if it were NOT for my association with Rich Smith there probably would not be a #260 gasket ever. Likewise, there was a little known one piece “Sizemore” Mr Gasket Boss 351C gasket, specifically developed for my second crowd pleasing Ford I/Gas Pinto “terror among the NHRA ranks” from mid to late 1970’s. .
