71 F350 rearend

I have a 71 F350 and one of the lug bolts was really tight and while putting pressure on it finally broke loose and I forcefully turned it a couple of rounds and the whole stud started turning but I can't get it out. Question is if I remove axle will the whole drum come off or will I have to try to get stud out somehow?

I almost answered your question wrong because I didn't read it right. Yes if you pull the axle shaft out, then the large nut behind it, then it should all come out. I would ask for help as manhandling a tire, axle and drum will be like wrestling a baby whale. After you get the hub and drum upside down, if its turning, then grind it down, then take a punch and hammer and drive it out. You could drill it out but you're risking ruining the stud hole. And please don't pound you hand like I always seem to do!!! Nothing with working with 45 year old iron is easy.

Hmm, I've never had that happen. In your case someone may have put a slightly wrong size stud in it to make their job easier. You'll know if it looks newer than the others.

Ok thanks hoss73ford. After sleeping on it I've got a plan to go between the duals with a saws-all and a long metal cutting blade to cut the one stud. I had the nut loosed a couple of rounds so I have clearance but I'm going to let the air out of both tires so I can have more room for the saw.

Wait a minute. I'll bet you're working on the driver's side aren't you? On the F350 duallys the lugs on the rear left side are left Hand Thread. The lugs on the right side are Right hand thread. So if I am right, spin the lug wrench to the right, not left.

fixed

I couldn't get between the dual with hacksaw so I ground, drilled, chiseled the offending lug nut off and then went to napa and bought 4 replacement lug bolts and studs. removing the axle and bearing was uneventful and with the drum off I drove the old lug studs out and replaced with new ones. I found that 3 others had bad threads along with the studs were iffy. So the job is completed with one new tire and all the old tube type rims with locking rings are now replaced with tubless rims from what I found think is from F350 from years 79-early 84.
Thanks for the help.
