428 value?

A friend of mine recently passed on and left a 1970 F250 with a 428 CI motor that he installed when he worked for a Ford dealership in the mid 1970s. He told me years ago that it was a TAM Engineering rebuild that he bought through their parts department. He was never happy with the performance of the original 360 CI. It has about 175K on it but it is still running. Anyone have a idea on what this motor is worth? The rest of the truck is a rust bucket. I put a dowel down #1 cylinder at TDC and down #7 at the same position of the crank and it does have approx. a 4" stroke. I've heard that these are highly desirable to rebuild.

thanks, Pat

TAM was a factory rebuilder in the Tacoma WA area. My dad got a rebuilt 292 there, which turned out to be NOT the engine he was promised--something he found out 20+ years later. But I digress. There should be a tag on the block that has the TAM info, and numbers stamped in there to indicate the undersize of the crank mains and rod journals, and the cylinder overbore.

"10-10-30" or similar.

That would be good to know for anyone thinking about this motor.

With it being a reman engine the block may have been bored and with 175k mile it could be worn beyond it's service limits making it worthless..040 is pretty much the limit on a 428 block.
I'm not interested but if I where I would what to pull a head to check the cylinder bore.

agreed. the details on that engine are the important part.
block year, head year, bore, crank, and type of heads will make a BIG difference. either way, it is only good as a core rite now even if all the numbers check out good.
and if they do not is is only worth it's weight as scrap metal.

If you can get it for $500.00 or less I do not think you could go wrong, with the rusted truck in the purchase. Need more info. #'s off intake, heads?

Head casting is C7AE?. It my be c7ae-a,it was too dirty to tell final letter for sure. Both heads are marked the same. Intake is c5ae9425c. I believe the engine may be from a 1967 full size car.

I got the engine running and it's hitting on all 8 cylinders and fairly quiet and smooth at an idle. It's been sitting for several months and had some lifter tick on startup but most went away as it warmed up. I found a remanufacturer's tag riveted to the front of the block and according to the tag it is: bore .040, rods .010, mains .010. I called a local machine shop and he told me they make .060 over pistons for it. Anyone have a guess on it's value for a rebuild?

They make .060 over pistons, but that does not mean that your block can be bored that far.

Mic those bores, it may seal up nice with new rings and quick hone job. Maybe....

Did you check the compression? I don't see where you stated that it "needs" a rebuild.
If it's quiet, and has good compression and it is not burning oil, I'd use it. If you just want to sell it, and it is in good running condition, it should bring 1K easily. Those blocks can also be sleeved.

I have a standard bore, still see the hatch marks, 428 CJ block sitting on a shelf. That seems to be going for about a grand around here.
