1978 F100 Project

Hello, I am a teenage from central Kansas and I am working on my first restoration of a 1978 F-100 that has been in the family since it was bought off the lot. I have little experience in restoring trucks but I have always dream of fixing this one up. It has the original straight 6 motor with 350,000 miles on it.

I am planning to do a complete restoration and put a little bit bigger tires on it and possibly paint it black. I am unsure if I will go with black as I am new to body work and it will show all of my errors. I am planning on using two coats of east wood's epoxy primer. Then, three coats of their contour polyester primer. Next, two coats of their 2K urethane primer. Finally, the base coat followed by the clear coat. I think I will be using the KBS frame coater kit.

Do you guys have any tips for painting, body work, or anything else. Thanks, Tyler.

Welcome to FTE, IMO it is easier to take the front bumper off, then the inner gril insert and outer grill shell off first, before you remove a fender.

Scribe mark the under side of the hood and the door where the hinges are before you remove them. That will help come reinstall and realignment time. But if you are doing a full on paint job you will paint over the marks, so have fun come "back together" time.

Thanks, I figured out that it was easier by the time I took off the other fender. I have to moving out of the weather before I will be able to take off doors and hood, but I can't wait.

1. Establish a vision of and overall goal the completed truck.
2. Identify the steps to achieve that vision.
3. Be realistic about time frames, costs, and your abilities. Know when to farm it out.
4. Do something everyday to achieve the vision.
5. Expand your skills and knowlege base. Teach yourself something new - welding, electrical work, and body work.
6. Have fun along the way.
