Replce the factory radio in a 2008 E350

I have a 2008 E350 and want to replace the junk factory radio. Among other things, it has no aux input and after playing a CD, the CD comes out of the unit almost too hot to touch. It skips terribly as well.

I'm trying to determine if I need a dash/mounting kit to install an aftermarket radio. Many of the sites that help you find the right kit seem to think that this vehicle has a single DIN radio, and it looks like there were a lot of different trim and dash designs in these vans.

My dash looks like this:

(of course it's not cherry but faux carbon fiber but that's beside the point).

As you can see, the radio is already not flush with the dash, so I question the need for any kind of trip pieces. Perhaps mounting brackets are needed though?

Has anyone done this install themselves and know about what mounting brackets are required?

I replaced mine with a Pioneer. However I paid a local business to install it. Yes there was a kit involved but I don't know about the details of the install.

I thought '08 received the newer "square" type dashboards? Might have guessed wrong though........

I've installed or replaced maybe 7-8 single DIN aftermarket units, have always used Crutchfield for nearly everything. They have adapter wiring harnesses making this sort of swap fairly easy.

I recall someone here or another site fitting a double DIN unit into dashboards like shown, it requires a generic mounting kit and a bit of trimming to the stock radio opening----not at all overly complicated.

I'll update this reply if its here on FTE, PM you if its for another site.

Were this me I'd invest in another dash front panel as a "just in case" back up.

UPDATE: Crap---OP doesn't yet have enough posts to send a PM----found a perfect link to the other site, check your Public Profile Visitor Messages.

Very easy to do. You just need a connector and a dashboard adapter which is just two trim pieces for the side. Any new head unit will be a huge improvement over the factory one. This is how my setup look like.

On a side note, I do not think I've ever put a CD or DVD in this thing in the three years since the install. It plays music directly from the iPhone via Bluetooth.

Instead of Amazon et al I'd visit Crutchfield---same low(er) prices, massive knowledge base and exceptionally helpful even with return items. Amazon not so much---they have products but not much more in the installation or selection areas.
