Does it slow down and speed up as your MPH changes
No noise stays the same just went out and cruised in every gear and speed down my road...

Are you sure it's not an HVAC blower motor on low speed? From where is this noise coming?

So took it for a speed racer like jaunt up the road for about 20 miles and it started knocking... checked the timing and it was at 20Deg BTDC... How does that happen!!? The distributor nut is as tight as it will go..

A few possibilities come to mind:

- Sticking mechanical advance inside the distributor
- Sticking vacuum advance

But given that this is the 87-96 forum (I spend most of my time in 80-86, wonder how I got here), you likely have neither of those, yours will be computer-controlled; have you pulled your codes?

You should check your timing chain for excessive looseness while you're in this area.

Hmm well id expect the timing chain to be tight being it was replaced 30k miles ago and yes pulled codes.. says my airbag is bad and my egr is malfunctioning.

Slipping harmonic balancer? Could it be that it's not the timing that changed, just the timing marks?

Nope! Learned about that here had it disconected both times... only variation is i used 2 differant timing lights.. So not sure if that would make any differance really. And i painted the numbers too in order to make sure that i was right. Had the engine warmed up also.

It started making a knocking clicking like noise when i accelerated so i rechecked timing and it was at 20BTDC So i re adjusted to 12 BTDC Which no noise now and way more acceleration and horsepower... I figure ill check it again in 2 days make sure nothing moved.
