oil in exhaust and leaking out dipstick

My neighbors 95 PSD started leaking out the dipstick and he noticed oil residue in the exhaust. Any ideas before it goes to the shop???

The top of the dipstick or where it mounts to the pan ?

Oil in the exhaust is an indication that the turbo needs a rebuild.

Tell your friend to in list to FTE before he heads to the shop, so he can go with some knowledge into the shop, or he can fix himself
Oil in the tail pipe is indication of a bad oil seal on the turbo, oil coming out the dip stick might just be the o ring the disp sticks have, check how much blow by the engine has,(with engine flip oil cab up side down on the fill hole and see it gets blown off if so, not good. Unless the dog house is plugged up( driver side valve cover the housing on it take it out clean it with some gasoline dry it put it back in.

Make sure it is oil residue in the exhaust, and not just suit and condensation mixture. A lot of people who are not familiar with the diesels make that mistake.

So it's blowing the dipstick out. Bad piston maybe?

That would be excessive blow by for sure. Take the oil filler cap off and turn it upside down over the hole while the engine is running, and see if it blows it off the hole.

Could also be a clogged ccv which would also explain oil in the tailpipe

Its on the top back of drivers side valve cover held on by two bolts. The wire screen is cleanable.
