Low Side Oil Pressure Diag

Party Bus E450 no start. 190k

Diagnosed it as low side oil pressure failure. Pulled the oil filter from side of engine, cranked, nothing came out. No oil pressure building on dash guage, cluster may not work. I hope to put an ohmeter on the oil pressure switch and seeing if it grounds while cranking (test to bypass suspect guage).

What size fitting is used on oil pressure test port on front-top of engine? What is spec at cranking?

Heard something about pulling the relief spring and seeing if it has oil on it or not, if so, lowpop works, if NO oil on relief/regulator spring lowpop not work, correct?

How common is a clogged pickup tube?

What else should be done/looked at when doing a COMPLETE diag on a low side concern?

Thanks!

If you can plug one of those pick up tubes, you would have a major disaster on your hands. The low side is set of gears on the crank, you can pull the regulator and check it.

Check the oil pump pressure regulator first.......might save ya a little work.

Agreed,,, if the housing isn't filling,, no use wasting time with the sensor. Pull the lpo regulator,, then prob the harmonic balancer and front crank seal and lpop.

But first clean the bottom of the oil filter housing with a magnet. If it looks like a troll doll head,,, then stop there and engine out. Hope it's not the latter issue.

Ha.

Are you insinuating shavings from the pump gears? Or pan? Oh and this was on a VAN so the oil filter was at the driver side of the block.

I had a relief plunger seize on me in another type of vehicle one time. It got some of the chemical gasket in it during flange install and got gummed up and seized in the bore.

How do these regulators specifically fail? I know it's just a piston in a bore, not rocket science, just asking ya'll what you have seen.

THANKS!

Not really much to fail with this regulator as it's a fairly large spring and piston. I don't know how the filter housing regulates on the "E" series engines, but I know if there is a large HPO leak you won't get oil in the filter housing or a pressure reading on the gauge sometimes.

On this VAN (think airport shuttle bus) there were two aluminum hard pipes bringing the oil from where the oil filter lives on a TRUCK.

Low side is dead from my diag. I just like to check my work from 3 or 4 different angles. It's called being thorough! Especially on these diesels when parts are $$$$$$.

Oh and more information on this VAN ya'll will like: complaint was it also has "always ran like crap", sounds like on acceleration. Pulled codes and it had low ICP code, and EGR codes. Gotta see which EGR codes. Can't recall. Either way, didn't matter about the EGR codes yet. HPOP was at no more than a few PSI.
throws another metaphorical log on the fire ^^^

Well crap. I missed that one about the e series. I don't know the thread of it off hand. But you can just unscrew the special fitting off of the oil cooler cover and thread in whatever you want to check lpo.
