Fuel Pressure Diagnostic After Injector Replacement.

This is my second post regarding this truck. I bought it with a known injector problem so I had them rebuilt and put back in a few days back. The truck doesnt want to turn over after trying to start it. Ive filled the HPOP reservoir after a few cranks and the truck shows no signs of wanting to start. I dont see smoke from the exhaust when trying which pointed me in the direction of the fuel being an issue. i rigged up the pluged port on the back driver side of the fuel bowl and checked the pressure, it reaches 40 psi and drops to 10 where it then slowly tapers to nothing.

Any thoughts on what to do next? Is the pressure supposed to drop after it reaches 40?

The fuel pressure should get up to the mid to high 50s. It is normal for the fuel pressure to drop when the fuel pump isn't running. The FPR (fuel pressure regulator) is vented to ensure that happens. It helps keep people from opening up a fuel system that's still pressurized. It's going to take several long cranks to get it started after removing an injector. The oil rails in the heads are full of air, which is compressible. The oil entering the heads has to compress the air to reach the 500 psi minimum ICP parameter for the PCM to send a fuel delivery command signal to the IDM to fire the injectors. Once it's been running, you may have extended cranking time for the next several starts as well. Do you have a way to monitor ICP while cranking?

As Pikachu is saying - ICP is the thing. It takes me about 20 seconds of cranking to get most of the air out of the rails before the PCM even fires a single injector. If you click the last link in my signature, you will find the minimum specifications before the PCM will fire the injectors - and only a fired injector can create smoke (no matter what's going on with fuel pressure).

If you had even one hiccup with the injector install, ICP can bleed out before reaching pressure. It's also possible the injectors were not the problem - or at least not all of it.

In order to start you need:

Min 10.5V while cranking
ICP - 500 psi
Fuel Press - 50 psi
RPM's - min 100

make sure the 42 pin connector is fully seated.

Good, now let it warm up to operating temps, re-torque the injectors, then go drive it for about 200 miles. It will smooth out as you work all the air out.
