Is this a D44 a high pinion?
Sorry about the pic quality & size, it came from the person that's selling it.

here is a shot of the tube diameter. I think that's the steering rod under axle tube.

Cheers, Allen

it could be. or it could be upside down in the picture.

without seeing the spring perches there is no way to tell for sure.

Assuming it's a front axle, turn the pinion shaft CCW (as you look at in in that picture). If the axles turn forward when you do that, then yes, it's a high pinion. If they turn backward than it's an upside-down low pinion. (If it's a rear axle you can do the same test but turn the pinion CW, forward is high pinion, backward is upside-down low pinion)

This help?

I don't know if they are stock discs on it or not, if original it would be 77'-78' wouldn't it?

What I want is a HP D44 HD with 1/2" thick tubes.
But I've read that the 1/2 ton HP D44 has 3" diameter x .250 thick tubes and the 3/4 ton HP D44 HD has 2.75" diameter x .500 thick tubes, then saw that the 3/4 ton HP D44 HD was 3" diameter & .500 thick tubes not 2.75" x .500.

So not sure what the difference what the 3/4 ton HP D44 HD has and whats different than the 1/2 ton HP. But then things change by years too.

So what is difference between a 3/4 ton HP HD and a 1/2 ton HP and how do I tell the difference?

PS, is this a 77'-78' with the two piece tube and cast radius arm piece that the tubes slip into?

Cheers, Allen

yes that helped, it is a high pinion F150 open knuckle disc brake D44.
look to see if there is a little metal tag on the differential cover.
if there is, get the numbers off it and we can tell you gear ratio and maybe even be able to narrow down the year it was made

OK, I'll be going to pick up a NP435 & 205 Tue, I'll check it out & get some more info.

Does this one have the 1/2" thick tube and are the tubes one piece with the radius arm bumps welded on or is it the two piece thin wall tubes with cast piece between them?

If is the thin tube or two piece tube but the center housing is the same as a 3/4 ton version I'll get it and re-tube it with 1/2" tube and put new Solid Axles inner C on it, can turn them then too.
I'll be using Chevy 8 lug outer knuckles, hubs & calipers.

Cheers, Allen

no idea, i have never messed with D44's. everything i have every bought or owned has had a D60 or larger except an old 69 F250 i had for a few months back in 1985 and that had a closed knuckle 44 with drum brakes
