quick question on vintage air gen II evaporator unit heater lines

Guys, quick question!
I have the Gen II partly fitted into my truck. I am about to fit up the heater hoses and discovered at the end of the copper pipes in the evaporator there are two rubber bungs or something. There is no mention of taking them out and I wondered whether they were some sort of filter for the ends? I can't see them clearly as the evaporator is now mounted with all plumbing under the dash. I tried poking a little bit of wire through, but it stopped about 1/4 of an inch in. Anyone know whether they should come out? or are they filters?
Thanks gents!

The heater core is a separate part from the evap. My heater core had a plug in each opening which I removed prior to connecting the heater hoses. A mirror and flashlight will help to verify.

makes sense that they are plugs. They are very firmly fitted, which makes me think I was gonna break something if I pulled em out, but what else could they be but blocking plugs? Wouldn't be filters, would they?
I am getting a bit freaked out over nothing again as usual. Thanks for that. I will see if I can pull em out.

Yep, bang on the money! Two thick rubber plugs. Buggers to get out. But out they came. Thanks for your help.
