I changed the auxillary tank in my 78 f350 a couple of weeks ago and everything went okay, until I tightened the straps. The new old tank that was in the parts shed was about 1.5" deeper than the old one. Extended the rear bolt and extended the front strap and the it fit just fine.

The other 3 dimensions appeared the same but after it was in place it definitely was deeper, think its a higher capacity but only by about 5 or 6 gallons. Straps lined up and sat flush to the side and the curve area that wraps under the tank had to be moved further down the strap in order to sit flush with the bottom of the tank. Tank was in place on top same as the old one and everything lined up the same. It was when I went to put the straps in place that I noticed it was different.

Had some wrench time on the truck today.
Swapped the front bumper for a (marginally) better spare. It's a little more banged up than the old one but doesn't have the peeling chrome.
Added some bumperettes I had lying around.
Tuned in the carb a little better - running pretty good.
Swapped in an intermittent wiper switch (shout out to FTE member Muddy74Ford for the part )
Wash and wax. Shines up as good as you might expect for 38 year-old paint.
All-in-all pretty happy with this ride.
Old bumper still has the license plate on it:

Great thread - really enjoying your work. Did you save the bed topper your truck had when you bought it? I wonder if nice condition vintage toppers are now becoming desirable.
Also, like someone else mentioned, these late 70's trucks - Ford & Chevy - are rapidly disappearing off farms and are also being "liberated" from being "stored" on people's driveways down here. I drove down and back to Austin over the weekend, and the amount of them being towed somewhere on I-35 was amazing.

I have been meaning to paint my wheels for a while now. Ever since I saw a set of wheels on line and thought "those would look fantastic on my truck!". When I looked closer I saw that they were the same wheels I already had on my truck, with the same hub caps. They just had been painted black and chrome trim rings added.
So yesterday I did this:
I still have the rear ones to do.
