Help resealing a 2004 D60 front axle.
Hi,
I am working on a 2004 F250 with the leaf sprung D60 front. It is leaking gear oil out of the end. I have resealed a 1979 D60 before, but this appears to be different.
What seals do I NEED for this axle? I dont care about the axle end seals (this is a work truck) and It has the standard hubs and manual shift T case, so do I need to order that whole mess of O rings? Is there a spindle bearing I should replace while I am in there? There are no hub seals right (as its a unit bearing)?
I ordered these seals, were labeled inner axle seals, but they are not correct. Do these go anywhere on the axle? And D50 and D60 seals are all the same on the 99-04 trucks right?
Here are the seals I have in hand TIMKEN 710413
Thanks very much for any information. Truck needs new Tie rod ends and an alignment, so I want to get this job done first while I have the steering linkage off!

These are the seals you need for the leak. The ones you have in your hand are dust seals. The go on the end of the axle housing. You will probably need the knuckle seal,
and check your unit bearing for wear. If it ok, you can put grease in it where the anti-lock brake sensor is or should be on the backside of the unit bearing hub. I got a zerk fitting from Riff Raff Diesel that allows for easier maintenance.
You might want to check the play in your ball joints while you have it torn down.

Thanks, ball joints and unit bearings are newer and tight. I think I will just pull the bearing assemblies off of the knuckle and grease the spindle bearing by hand (was just doing some research).
So I will order those inner axle seals. Looks like they rotate unlike the ones in my 1979 front end.

Do i need the vacuum seal that requires the special tool? No vacuum at front axle, but now Im thinking it also protects the spindle bearing?
Looks like I will need 2 of each:

More Information for DANA HOLDING CORP 52148
And then of course I will order the OTC 6695 tool. In charge of a few 01-04 F250s at the moment, so I will use it again.

Having an embarrassing amount of trouble removing the vacuum seal from the stub shaft. Every single instructional source shows the axle being removed from the knuckle, then all of a sudden they are hammering on the new vac seal.
How do you get it off!? It seems to be 3 pieces that will not come apart. Do I have to cut it?
Thanks

Answered my own question when I pulled the long passenger side axle shaft. This side was missing the metal protector and the vacuum seal came off easy. So I just knocked the protector off of the other side. Gotta love those heat treatment lines!
The passenger side had the unit bearing replaced in the near past by some shop. One of the thrust washers was missing! Does not appear to have made much of a difference, but id like to throw in a new one. Does anyone have a part number? Thanks!

Go this website 4x4 Tech Inc dba QUAD 4x4 - very helpful.
QU40385U 3PC THRUST WASHER SET in Used Ford Axle Parts
Dont know how a thrust washer for a 99-2004 SD counts as obsolete though!
