1994 f250 loses power when plow attached

I have a 94 f250 I just got running again. It has a fisher speed cast plow hooked up. I connected the plow and everything worked for about 10 minutes, than it suddenly lost power while it was idling.

I thought maybe one of my wires was lose, I wiggled and tightened all of them to no avail. I changed the battery to no avail and kept wiggling and tightening.

I than unplugged the plow and noticed it had some power so I jumped it and it started right up. I than plugged the plow in and it lost power. No interior lights came on, etc. it was like it had no battery. So I unplugged plow and jumped again, it started up again.

Any idea what is going on? One thought I had is there are two solenoids but they are both for a truck, I read there might be special ones for plows? Anyone have any idea if this could be the issue? If so anyone know what solenoid I need or where to find out?

I have an older plow. It is a fisher speed cast also. Sounds like it is a little different than yours. To me it sounds like a stuck relay that is draining your battery.

The Western 56131 relay is a very HD relay. You can get one at a western plow dealer in your area. I bought one for about $20. A little high but he had it in stock. Do not go with an aftermarket or a parts store relay. The western relay weighs twice as much. I talked to the dealer and he said people are bringing in their plows (not working) and they have a new aftermarket relay that bit the dust. (they said they just bought the relay)

There should be one relay for the truck starter, and one for the plow. They may be identical unless one has been changed.

If you go to change the relay, disconnect the battery first. Take a couple pictures, so you have something to look at if you mix up the wires.

Thx. Is a relay considered the same thing as a solenoid? Any link to the relay you purchased!

Yea it relay/solenoid pretty much an interchangeable term in this application.

Here is a list to see if you have a dealer in your area. It was better for me to pick on up rather that mail order. I was in a hurry for it. Plus you may be able to talk to the guy and ask questions, if he is cool..

This is a link to Amazon. Price is still at $20, but they want to get you another $10 for shipping.

BTW Do not get one of these. It is a replacement for the Western but it is light duty. Probably get you by for a while.

Also another idea. On mine I have a mounted joystick control. It has 2 cables and one wire. The wire grounds through the cables and when you move the control it sends the ground through the single wire to energize the relay. If that wire gets pinched somewhere through the dash it will energize the relay.

My setup does not have a connector to plug it in. Mine is hard wired right to the plow/hydraulic motor. So I am not sure on your wiring. So I am kind of going on a guess.

If you have to use a parts store relay, make sure you get one rated for "Continuous Duty" Don't just stick a Ford starter relay in there and expect it to work, it won't for long. Even though they look very similar, the Continuous duty solenoid will be what you need.

Sounds like you have a different model than I do. Since you said you have connectors. My plow uses 2 cables to control it. I found this info... It has a troubleshooting guide that seems quite helpful. It still could be a stuck relay or a couple other things. Troubleshooting starts on page 36. I was guessing motor running continuously. Hope this helps. A lot of info.
