I have a reliable exhaust shop lined up to do the work on my 89 F150; but they wont install headers. My question is if it is safe for my 5.0 to drive the 6.5 miles to the muffler shop with LT headers only? If not what is the least I should do to prevent any damage to my engine/heads?
Your biggest worry would be a ticket for a noise violation.
Are your O2 sensors installed? If not, expect engine codes and poor performance, but you should make the 6.5 miles without damage.
Also considerable risk to your hearing as it's real loud in the cab with open long tube headers.
Right now just the 1 O2 going into the Y pipe, which I've gathered works fine in just one side. As for the noise....well a tickets probably still cheaper than a tow truck so I'll take my chances!
Just drive it and go... she'll be fine. The only thing that might hurt an engine is NO exhaust at all, as in not even headers/manifolds.
As for tickets... around here as long as you ain't trying to be loud on purpose and flooring it everywhere, most loud vehicles that sound even halfway decent don't get a second glance from Johnny Law. If you're really worried about it, find a buddy with a loud bike to cruise next to you. Loud bikes around here don't get a second look either.
