Is there any vendor for a bolt- or weld-in subframe/crossmember to use the Corvette C5 front suspension components on a 55? I know Flat Out and Progressive Automotive has for the C4 but the more I read about the C5 the more I'd like to step up to this suspension. Can't find any vendor for a kit to install it though.
I have not seen any kits for the C5 either. I thought it would be interesting to find a salvage C5 and use the whole drivetrain but the wheelbase is quite a bit different. There was a good thread on the H.A.M.b. about lengthening or shortening the drive shaft. Quite a challenge since it runs at engine speed and can be tough to get the vibration out. But what a truck that would make.
I already have the 55 and a bullet proof 33 splined Ford 9" rear end so I want to use the front suspension only. I see that Art Morrison might have what I'm looking for but the price is pretty high and they have only for the C6 and C7 which also rises the price on the donor parts. After what I read the C5 and C6 is pretty much the same components also.
I have quite a bit of C5 suspension/driveline components in the shop, in fact I have a complete set of frame rails that was used to build a jig for a C5 conversion on a Gen 1 Camaro. One of the unique features of the C5 suspension design is that the front left suspension components are the same as the right rear...the corners can be swapped. Instead of a R&P in the rear, there is a tie rod to keep the spindles from turning. The biggest issue you will have is deciding how you will mount the a-arms as in the stock C5 the lower arms mount to the engine cradle and the uppers to the frame. In the rear the lowers mount to the transaxle cradle and the uppers to the frame. In my humble opinion there is little to be gained in trying to go with a C5 over a C4, especially in one of these trucks. The C5 has better brakes but you can solve that issue on the C4 by upgrading the discs/rotors.
