Mercury Mountaineer Spark Plug Wire setup
Hello all, I have a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer, 8 cyl. it has 200,000 miles, but its engine is strong and does not burn any appreciable oil between oil changes. Recently it started to miss, so I decided to do a complete tune-up, coil packs, Plugs and wires . All parts are Genuine Ford replacement parts. Here is where I have a problem:
The old wires are NAPA, they are not shielded at all at any of the plug connections, however the new Ford Wires have some plugs shielded with metal cases and others with long cloth looking shields .. probably asbestos? not sure.. but the question is what wire goes where?
I looked in the Chiltons manual for Mountaineer and Explorer and no where does it tell which cylinder gets the metal shielded wire and which one gets the asbestos shielded ones..
Any help would be appreciated

The metal shields and the jacketing are there to protect the wires from extreme heat and wear. So the ones with metal shields should go where they will reach and are really close to the exhaust manifold. Similarly, the jacketed ones will go where the wire runs near either the exhaust manifold or something else that could cause chafing.
