Rattling Door Check Straps

As the title says.

Driver door isn't bad, but the passenger used to rattle horribly, to the point it was drowning out all the other rattles, squeaks, pops, and groans. Applied a big wad of electrical tape to where the rubber bumper used to be at one point, and was able to get it to quiet some.

Then I noticed Carpenter's were offering re-popped straps, so I bought two. Was very pleased, as they looked exactly like the originals. Really only needed the bumpers, but installed the entire strap, as they are nickel plated and look better. Re-used the old pins because the new ones didn't look like the old ones.

While the rattle is certainly tolerable now, it is still there occasionally.

I noted that, when installing the new straps, there appears to have once been something installed along the inner face of the door edge where the slot is for the strap. There are two rivets, one above, and one below, the strap slot. I suspect that when new, there was once a thick rubber piece attached to the door by those rivets, and that it had a slit that the strap slid through, and maintained tension so that the strap didn't flop against the opening.

I have come to the conclusion that the easiest fix, is to cut a rectangular piece of relatively dense rubber, perhaps 3/8" thick, and glue it to where the old piece used to reside. I see no easy way to re-rivet a new piece in, as there just isn't much room to get my fat paws in there.

Anyone here address this issue in their trucks?

Yes, I have the same issue. I added what I think is an earlier car rubber piece that helped at first but it slides back towards the stop and the rattles start again. Interested as well to see what others say/have done.

How about using split tubing on the edges of the opening? Probably have to glue them.

That is an idea Ross, will have to see what sort of clearance there is between the strap and opening.

I have also thought it may be possible to get a rivet gun down inside the door, but if that is possible, I still would have to contend with the issue of trying to get the old rivets out. Just ain't no room down inside there. They just about had to put that rubber piece in before the door skin was put on.

Can't a rubber piece be slid onto the strap, just captured against the end of the strap, on the inside of the door?

Will have to take another gander at the door construction. The area where the strap goes through is double wall. It may be possible to find thin walled tubing somewhere, and cut it to such length that it will slide through the inner wall, prevent the rattling, yet not show or hang up on the outside wall/jamb.

Won't be looking at it tonight though, drizzling rain and cold out there. Dark too. And really wet.
