Debating doing a 5.8 turbo build

I have a 1997 F250 5.8, so its Speed Density and OBDI. Unfortunately from what I've been reading with both of these it would be harder to bring the truck to mix fuel and air because its SD and not MAF. But, I've also been reading you could purchase a Moates Quarter Horse and tune it so it'll all work nicely.

Been adding a parts list together of what I will need and was wondering if anyone with any experience of knowledge could add to what I may need.

99-03 Powerstroke Turbo (Reason behind is for waste gate)
Moates Quarterhorse Chip
Tuning Software
Boost Gauge
Fuel Pressure Regulator
36lb Injectors
Check Valves to MAP sensor so MAP Sensor wont see boost
Piping
Fuel Pumps
Wideband O2 Sensor

Trucks internals are all stock so not looking to be making high boost only around 6-8PSI until I go through it all and get some better internals to push it past that safely because this is a daily driver.

Any help and other information would be appreciated

Thanks, Mike

You don't need to step up the shortblock assy, it'll make plenty of power without a complaint. Running 13psi in mine. The stock SD EFI will be you're biggest prob. I installed Holley HP on my F150 to be able to tune it correctly/easily.

I thought that the 97's were OBD2 with Mass Air?

96-now are OBDII.I have seen some Ford cars come through that were 96's with still OBDI but an extremely small percent.

From my own research and a little bit of armchair racing you can put globs of boost on a stock 351W just fine and given that you have the heads, intake, exhaust, and cam for it as well as a good tune for a setup it has been proven on a dyno by hot rod mag if I am not mistaken that a stock 351W in good shape will make a crap-load of power, your biggest obstical is a good tuning software and either a way to tune it yourself or someone who knows how to do it. I don't rember numbers and I really should dig this articular back up but it was really cool to see how well the stock stuff held up in the end.

From my research only the F150 turned to OBDII/MAF in 1995, and I believe some Cali emission F250s/F350s also. But, other than that the F250/F350s with the 351 and 460 remained OBDI, and believe SD no MAF

Shadow might be referring to this article
How to Push a Junkyard 351 Windsor Past 1,000 HP! - Big-Bang 351W

Held up to 20+PSI and 1,000+HP before failure due to their own fault. I'm so not much worried about getting everything to fit, but as said getting tuning down. This is my daily driver so I don't want to end up getting 5MPG with this thing running crazy rich and just dying out. But, from what Ive been reading on the Moates Quarter Horse I my self could tune it, bring it to get tuned on a Dyno, or spend $100 extra for a custom tune to be done, for all Im doing to it.

Anyone else have any further input on how hard it would be to tube a Speed Density system for this

Not hard if you use an aftermarket computer setup. A fellow years ago on turboforums used a Holley commander system I believe to run his SD chev setup. Google turbo grenade I think and you should find it. LOTS of reading but well worth it. He was well over 700 HP on literally the worst SBC heads ever made... Ever. And a generic comp cam that just about all hot rodders start with for Chevys lol. Just to see if it could be done. Your best bet is to ready a lot before adding boost.

Edit here's the link lots of good info on timing and fueling

Been doing tons of reading and think I pretty much got all I need to know down. Except I've never tired tuning before and doesn't seem to hard. Especially since I could submit all upgrades I'm looking to do to moated and they'd burn a chip with everything. Also found a local guy who only does tuning to fords, so sent him and email to see what he could do

Yep that is the article I was referring to. Made me feel kinda dumb that you can make that much power on the stock setup.

Crazy to think that it could go from 210HP all the way to 1,000HP on stock internals
