Flames out my exhaust manifold

Hi, I just did head gaskets, timing chain, and new distributor on my 5.0 302. Just started it up and there is flames coming out the exhaust manifold.

Is it because the distributor is a tooth off or do I have a different problem? Any suggestions helps. Thanks!

I had a similar issue I don't know what caused it but I removed the smog pump and it quit mostly

In your case I think if it's just the manifolds with no pipes it could be normal if not it seems if the timing gears are off it could have the exhaust valves open at the wrong time

smog

Well I have the exhaust hooked up but one flange boly broke so there is a small gap between the manifold and the pipe.

Also the smog pipe going to the exhaust, broke. So it is just going to the air. Could that really cause it?

I believe that can plug your catalytic converter but I don't have one so I can't verify

Flames out the exhaust are not normal. If you have to remove the smog pump to get it to mostly quit, then there is still something wrong.

OP you have a timing issue. Re-check your timing. Have you checked it with a light?

I haven't put the light on it yet. I was a little afraid to run it. Whith flames. I don't want to ruin valves.

Check your timing... it's probably retarded and allowing combustion to continue out into the exhaust during the overlap.
