Gear Selector shifts to R with no Key
Ok, so last weekend we were camping with the X. Mom & girls were off to the shower while me and two year old boy were cleaning up from cooking. I put him in the driver's seat of the X so he could "drive". The key was NOT in the ignition. The parking brake was not set. I walk to the cooler and look up and the X is sloooowly rolling backwards.... I run over to it & it stops about the time that I get there as it comes gently to rest against a tree.
So we get home & I start looking on here and see the posts about the two screws that sometimes come loose on the column/shifter. I check those and they are both tight. Here is what else I found:
with no key in the ignition, the shifter will move toward reverse just enough to let the vehicle roll (pushing the brake has no effect on the movement of the selector).
with the key in the ignition and turned to the on position, the selector will not move at all until the brake is pressed.
Any idea what the problem is?????
I can see the "blocking" mechanism that is supposed to keep the selector from moving, but why will it move at all without the key on????
Please help!!
