I will be ready to buy a new truck this Spring.
Still undecided as to what I really want. Diesel or V10...
I know there are die-hard 'strokers on this board and gassers...
So here we go.
I do not think I will be able to afford a new Powerstroke...But will be able to afford a new V-10. I am looking at either the Supercab 4x4 or CC (probably SC though). And still have not decided between the F250 & F350.
Most of the use will be on weekends. I have a car to commute in, but need a truck for: Dunp runs, work around the house, hauling snowmobiles, and a travel trailer about 27'. I would like to put a small lift on it down the line 4-5".
So bottom line, would you rather have a used truck or new?
I probably will end up keeping the truck for the life of the loan and then some. Amount of driving I do with my truck now is about 12 - 15,000 miles a year. Once we have kids I will be looking to move into a CC.
Thanks for your input and sorry for the long message
I would buy used as well. Well I did. I agree you can save a ton of money by letting someone else eat all that depreciation. It's neat to have a brand new rig that no one has screwed up or abused but you can usually tell by the condition of a used vehicle if it's been cared for. My truck I bought with 66,000 miles and it's a f-350 powerstroke cc lb 4x4 xlt 6spd manual t-case and hubs and I got it for $22,000. To buy it new would have been about $35,000 at the very least. That's a pretty big savings I think. Plus with the diesel 66k is very low mileage.

New OR Used???
My F-250 was the first vehicle I bought new. Got tired of having to put up with other people's problems & repair bills that rivaled the cost of a new vehicle. Besides, the $$$ savings on a recent model year, low mileage truck was not big. For a few thousand more (literally) I was able to buy a brand new one, with the exact options that I wanted. The $$$ I saved in financing alone (new truck = Ford 0% finance; used truck = high rate loan) almost made up the difference. The additional $$$ I saved in repair bills (or lack thereof, due to warantee) actually made buying new CHEAPER, in my case, than buying very gently used.
haroutd -
My thoughts are the same as what you did. Providing I get a gasser - I can afford to do that, 0% is nice too. The hard part is deciding what do I want...used diesel, or new V-10
I will never buy new. I agree with previous posts that a new car/truck is the worst investment a person can make. I feel like if I do the research and thoroughly inspect the used rig I am looking at, I will buy one that will last a long time at a fraction of the cost of a new one. However, (and that is a big however now-a-days) if you get a hold of a lemon and based off of the cost of mechanics (especially the dealers) you are going to get upside down in your rig fast. I chose to buy mine (listed below) used with 36K miles. It is still under warranty and I purchased it at about 10K below new. My point is this: do the leg work and be patient. I prefer the diesel so it took me about 1.5 years to find a used one with low miles (that fit my wants). They are out there, just keep looking. It appears that the resale on V10's is not as good as diesel so that is something to compare as well. I don't mean to start a war, just what I found up here. I hope this helps.
haroutd are you saying that your current truck is crap, because it is now used. I hear all the time used cars are junk so that means you better never buy a car because once you drive it it is used.

New OR Used???
I didn't say my truck is crap because it's used. Nor did I say anything else you inferred. I said I got tired of putting up with other people's problems & high repair bills. With my new vehicle & warantee, my repair bills are $0 and I have not received any hand-me-down problems. If buying new were so "wrong" then how could you ever find a used car to buy? With no "new" owner, you couldn't be a "used" owner.
It's a personal choice thing. Personally, I like having a new vehicle. I like that no one "deflowered" the vehicle before I laid my paws on it. I like that I know exactly how it was treated, what it endured, etc. I like that I don't need to spend a penny on repairs for a while. If I can afford it, I would chose to buy new every time. But that's a BIG "if" on the affording it part. I am also aware that buying used has many advantages. Like I said, this is only the first new purchase I have made, and it's my 5th vehicle so far.
