Fuel Leaking during fill up

Last week while filling my tank, I noticed a pool of gas forming under my tank. During a brief inspection under the left rear wheel well, it appears that the fuel is leaking down the drivers side of the gas tank from the spot where the tank meets up with the fuel filler pipe.

During this particular fill up, I had the pump automatically stop twice in the beginning before it finally filled up the tank. Yesterday I tried filling up again...the pump didn't automatically stop and there was no leaking.

Talked to the local Ford shop and they want $120 just to diagnose the problem.

Any thoughts on what could be the issue?

Grommet or seal, most likely. Happens a lot on Mustangs.

Take a much closer look the next time it happens.

I had the retaining ring (the screw-on ring that looks like a mason jar lid) snap and the entire "fuel delivery module" including the float, pump, and hoses was just sitting on top of the tank.

But that doesn't sound like your problem

My filler neck was also very corroded and I resorted to sand-blasting and painting it while I had the tank out.

Could be a bunch of things, actually, keep an eye on it when you fill it and see if you can tell where it's coming from.

Take it to an independent shop and see what they charge to look at it. It's possible that they may deduce the problem quickly, and only charge you for the repair.

Took it to a local shop and they didn't see any issues...also, the Scangauge isn't pushing any codes. Apparently whatever is happening it's not immediately apparent when looking at it. I'll just watch it for now and if it continues to occur I'll just have to bite the bullet and pay the $120 for the official ford diagnostic.

Depending on where you are located those filler necks can rot out. Probably a rare chance of that happening.

See if you can physically twist the filler neck hose with your hand. I have had the vent tube loosen up on its own and develop a leak.

Side note: Albuquerque? Helicopters?
