Snow/Tire Chains on 20" Tires - 2011 F250
The Ford manual states that snow chains cannot be used on 20" tires.
1. Does anybody know why that is? (It appears that there is lots of clearance behind and around the tires).
2. Why would only class "S" be prescribed for 18 inch tires?
3 Does anybody monitoring this forum have actual experience employing tire chains on Super Duty trucks with 20" tires? If so, any issues and what type chains did you use?
I'd like to go with something more durable then class S to support Search and Rescue operations in the mountains over the winter on my 20" BFG tires..... ideally these for offroad application: https://www.qualitychaincorp.com/pro...fulltext=3931N
Thanks for any thoughts/input

I have lots of experience with tire chains on large semi's and a bit on 1 tons but if I had to guess why they say no on 20" tires it would be due to the sidewall size. If you can't get enough of the rail onto the sidewall its very likely to have the tire chain slip off and take out a fender well.

As well if you are looking for a durable long lasting chain I would recommend Trygg for tire chains and make sure you get cam-locks on the chains that will aid in tightening up your chains. If you put any miles on chains you want to be able to get them so tight that you actually have issues getting them back off. Cam-locks will aid in that. I believe they used to make one called Super 2000 that was a titanium alloy or something like that and they were extremely light compared to regular steel ones.

Tire chain offers 20" tire chains. I always got the v chain style for extra grip. I never had 20" tires though.

Then Ford would be liable to idiots that can't apply critical reasoning to what they read because they said "could" instead of "NO". Same way U-Haul swears up and down anything over 55mph and their trailers will actually explode.
