Oil Sludge in Ecoboost

A friend of mine sent me this and asked me to post.

He has a 2013 F150 Ecoboost that he got in to go to work started and he said it was knocking like a diesel. He got out and checked the oil and there was no oil on the dipstick? He does his own oil changes and had done it 3000 miles ago with 6 qts of Mobile one synthetic. He crawled under the truck nothing looked out of the ordinary so he decided to change the oil. When he pulled the plug this is what came out of the oil

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wfcnxdm4yd..._0166.mov?dl=0

This is Mobile one with 3000 miles on it! After the oil change it ran fine. He ran for a bit and changed it again. He has CEL for a bad crank sensor. What would cause this? It didnt seem to have metal in it or water in the oil. Just this sludge. Im at a bit of a loss what would cause it.

Link is dead. Any chance that he didn't use the correct viscosity oil?

Since he does his own changes, did he mention if he noticed a slight difference in the oil each time he changed it?

Link still doesn't work. Stop using Dropbox and just post it with photo bucket. Or do whatever you did on F150forums as that link works!

Agree. Sorry, there's no way that is a 3000 mile oil change.

How many miles on the truck? I'd pull a valve cover off and inspect.

Hi firedaniel,

It sounds like it's time for your friend to get in touch with his dealership. Do you happen to know how many miles are on his truck? I'm guessing that he isn't on his forum; if that's the case, he can reach out to my colleagues at the Customer Relationship Center for assistance. Their number is 1-800-392-3673.

Thanks that oil is nasty. If I didn't know better I would think its never been changed. He does regular maintenance on it. He looked the cel up on it and it's A PCV valve code.

The truck is just out of warranty 40k miles on it. He is taking it to ford tomorrow.

Agreed. I also doubt everything was perfect, then one day it sounded bad & the oil looked like that. Oil doesn't just fail over night.

I change my oil when there is 20% oil life left which seems to be around 7,000 miles. The dealer does mine with Motorcraft oil. At 86,000 miles mile oil looks better than that.

I guess this is an argument for having the dealership do your changes. Had an oil change, new filter & tire rotation done on the F250 today. They were running a special, $22.95. You can't even beat that price at home.

From what we have been able to find if a PCV valve does fail it can cause the oil sludge like that. Apparently it traps the acidic gasses and breaks down the oil. I read a couple of different articles on it tonight. This seems to fit. I didnt know that would cause it.

I would think that this would be caught by checking the oil on the dipstick, if the oil has to be coaxed out of the oil pan like that, you will see something going on when you pull the dipstick out, could the pcv be screwed up? It's possible. When doing my oil changes, I always look in the fill hole and look at the castings and cams to see if any thing is starting to go on with crankcase ventilation, this looks bad.

In my quest to find why this happened I ran across this thread, first thanks to firedaniel for posting for me and for everyone's input. Let ya all know what ford tells me in the morning and Crystal I'll be in touch, even I was amazed truck ran fine was at 25% oil life left little less than 3k miles on Mobil one full synthetic. I shut her down for night and went out in morning and she started knocking on startup . I immediately checked pressure which was good and shutdown. I then pulled dip stick and saw jelly like substance on the stick which is why I ran to store picked up new filter and another two gallons on Mobil one. ( I'm not an ocd'er and I should be I guess, but after an oil change I check for leaks for 24-hrs, check dipstick and if all ok I let her be till next oil change) I'm also not gonna say I drive it like a Mercedes but I bought a work truck for well - use as a work truck and like all my tools I take care of what makes me money to the best of my ability-lol

When I opened oil drain and nothing came out I knew his wasn't going to be good. CEL was not on before knocking but soon as I heard knocking CEL came on. P010 crankshaft sensor/ OCV
She's not knocking now and seems to run ok however CEL stayed on. I ran oil for day and then drained and performed another oil and filter still sludge building up. For an 80.00 per oil change for a self change there's definitely something not right with this ecoboost. I don't have the ford mod on the turbos to reduce moisture as in the turbos as I purchased in a non humid climate and moved to a humid climate- but I also didn't see any white oil residue indicative of moisture in the motor either. I'm at a loss but I think firedaniel might have the most logical reasoning. Thanks again all

Hi Scsmith, welcome to FTE! So just to be clear, this is your truck in the videos?

I've never seen anything like this before. Very curious to see the resolution.
