Could this be a factory option in 1977?

Hi!
I am working on my project truck and would like to know if this air spring could be a factory option in 1977. I suppose not but maybe a dealer option or an aftermarket accessory? What do you Think? Thanks! /Mats

I seriously doubt is was a dealer option way back when. So yes aftermarket and added on by some PO (previous owner).

The answer is no, at least I never heard of it way back when those were new.

I would suspect that a PO used to pull trailers or carried a load. Those are a common towing upgrade in the aftermarket, should be easy enough to find out if they run off a compressor or need to be filled with an air hose like air shocks used to be.

There's no compressor. There are pipes from air springs to an air valve in a small hole in the rear bumper. I have not tried to regulate the air pressure yet. I was just curious how they work when used together with leaf springs. I think the truck feels quite soft and comfortable for an unloaded truck. Thanks!

Is that your mustang on photobucket also? And although 285 sounds expensive for shipping the brake parts in your other thread, the truck aint worth doodly without the parts.

No, gatorfor88. The Mach1 -69 is long gone! I only got 2 trucks now.(a -56 and a -77) You are making me a little confused now about the brake question?
Maybe a have posted a thread in unconsciousness or it's an old thread???

Add-on. I'm pretty sure they didn't even know what air bags were back in 77

Air suspension was not included in standard production American-built cars between 1960 and 1983. In 1984, Ford Motor Company incorporated a new design as a feature on the Lincoln Continental Mark VII . So no its a aftermarket add on judging from its looks its a newer set up "air leaf support" . hope it helps . Joe

1957 Cadillac El Dorado Brougham came standard equipment with air suspension, it was also standard equipment on 1958/60 Cadillac El Dorado, Biarritz & Seville.

A neighbor had a 1960 Cadillac Brougham and a steep driveway. She was forced to park it on the street because overnight the air bags would bleed down, leaving the rocker panels inches from the ground.

When she fired it up in the morning, it would take 10 minutes or so for the air bags to inflate.

1958 Chevrolet Impala's with optional air suspension have a name plate on the rear body panel that said Level Air.

Hook up to a trailer and air them up until the truck is back to height. Look around for a level gauge, tube filled with liquid and has an air bubble in it, should be near back of truck if it's there.

Air bags were used but I doubt on f150s. Kenworth had airride in the seventies, but hadn't made it into pickup trucks yet.
