Thumbs down Safe to purchase 2012 50kmls diesel?

Hi,

I am looking for a used F250 and came across a nice 2012 CC XLT 4x4 6.7 diesel with 50,000 miles.
I really was looking for something with less miles, but this one seems to be a good deal. Any reservations purchasing a diesel with 50k miles?
Thank you.
Berrie

A diesel 6.7 with 50k is basically brand new. I just purchased a 7.3 with 5x that and I expect her to last me another 250k.

It would all be dependent on how it was treated. Fuel system and valve problems are what kill these engines, not bearings or rings. One tank of bad fuel, or even as little as a quart or two of DEF in the tank can destroy the HPFP. This is more than a $10,000 repair at the dealer.

The days of diesel engines lasting longer than gas have been over for quite awhile now. Modern diesel engines rarely wear out, but repair costs when things break can break the bank. Modern gas engines rarely wear out and tend to be much cheaper to fix. I'd sooner get a used gas truck than a diesel one.

I certainly hope it fulfills this goal for you. Sadly there are lots of them that don't.

I'd think twice about buying a 6.7L or 6.4L Ford diesel. They are ungodly expensive to repair, and they are not the reliable, long-lasting engines that the 6.0L and 7.3L are. Five-figure repair bills are not that uncommon.

I bought a 2012 KR with 47,000 miles on it a couple of months ago. It's a Ford CPO I bought from the dealer I buy all my cars from (10 in total). I didn't even give it a second thought.

Maint records and verify warranty status and get an extended ford warranty with it.

Need to learn how to care for a modern diesel.

If you can verify its condition it might be just fine, but as Tom said buyer beware.
