02 Expedition Eddie Bauer surging / lurching

Howdy!

I've got a 2002 Eddie Bauer Expedition 5.4L that (according to my wife) surges when stopped while in drive. Personally I've been unable to experience and confirm it for myself.

She says that when stopped while in drive and foot on the brake, engine idle will increase and unless her foot if firmly on the brake, the vehicle will move forward.

She's not driving with two feet and says her foot is nowhere near the accelerator.

Unfortunately I've never experienced this. Whenever I drive it, its fine. When it does occur for her, it seems totally random and can be several weeks between incidents.

I called our local dealer and spoke to a fella in the service dept and he wasn't sure, said he's not seen this before and suggested I schedule a appointment when I had time.

Oh, its not throwing any codes either.

Y'all got any ideas?

This is a common occurrence when the IAC valve gets dirty and sticks.

About a $35 part. Takes about 20 minutes to replace due to the poor location of it (located in the back of the throttle body).

It controls the idle during different loads. For example, when the A/C is turned on the compressor loads down the engine and the idle would drop to around 600 RPMs, so the IAC valve opens up a bit to keep the idle up around 800. Same when turning the steering wheel when sitting still, or when in Drive versus Park.
