DECODING VIN # TAG ON MY 67 M250
#3
Y = 360 2V
R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.
D00994 = 1968, assembled March 1968.
On sale day, 352/360 engines magically become 390's!
Warranty Plate: 179 Certified Net HP @ 4,000 RPM
If this was a 1967: Y = 352 2V .. 172 net HP @ 4,000 RPM
Is the truck registered by this VIN, which I assume you found on the Warranty Plate (riveted to the left door face below the latch)?
The problem was, people replaced damaged left doors with used doors. 99.9% of the time, they failed to install the original Warranty Plates on the replaced doors.
1967: You push the inside door handles forward to lock the doors. 1968/72's have door lock *****.

1968/76 F100/350 360/390 share the same block and heads, the bore is the same (4.05"), the stroke is different: 360 = 3.50" / 390 = 3.78."
So, the only difference between a 360 and 390 are the 390's crank, rods and pistons. EVERYTHING else is the same!

Prior to the reverse 105, 352 was cast on the block instead. Since all FE engines were cast as 352's, this foundry mark reflected this, but when finished, the engine could be a 352, 390, 410 or 428.
To verify if it's a 390, measure the stroke: 360 = 3.50" / 390 = 3.78."

Reverse 105 could be a 360 or 390...because the bare block is the same!

Before you buy a 390 do the measurements to make sure someone hasn't already put a 390 in it. You may have been told the truth. It probably is a 360 but you never know what has been done to these trucks. The first step is to make sure what you have. I once bought a F250 that was supposed to have a 360 but actually had a 390. You never know.
