Nick, tried to rep you, but got denied.
I run Howe's in the winter and occasionally add some bio-clean to prevent algae from growing in the system.
I also use rotella oil, but I only change it every 5000 miles. Fuel filters are changed every 15000 miles in my trucks.
As far as mods go. First you need to figure out why you have to hold the throttle when the truck first starts. The problem could be the injectors, but there are several other possibilities too. Does it smoke when it starts? The chip should not be run w/o an EGT gauge. Most guys will install an EGT gauge, TFT gauge, and a boost gauge. I would also recommend the 6637 air filter mod (or other non-K&N filter mod) and upgrade the down pipe. The downpipe and air filter are cheap mods and will really help the engine.
First thing is to figure out why it starts hard though.

Considering my experience with diesels, I don't have a clue where to start looking for the lopey start.

The PCM is trying to control the idle with incorrect info. You can start by unplugging the ICP sensor & look for oil leaking from it . Try starting it with the ICP unplugged . If its an auto , try starting it in neutral (TRS) issue . May also be a sticking IPR . Get it on a good scanner & post the live data. We can take it from there .
IPR?
i did notice a good bit of oil in the valley between the heads when changing the fuel filter today...
I have torque app and dash command for my shelby. I also have an autel 400

So finally drove this thing a bit today. I'm impressed with braking. I found the stock setting on the chip. Crap this thing is a dog! Position 2 is high idle, with no other changes noticed. Position 3 it starts to wake up and is pretty driveable. Positions 4-6 are not as drastic a difference, but I think its there. Around 5 I could start to get the tires to spin a bit on a hard start.
Tried starting in neutral, no change. I'll try the ICP sensor when the rain stops.
Looking into the 6637 type mods and would love to do a down pipe, but just not in the budget right now.
I'm pretty convinced I need a EGT gauge, but oil field (my line of work) is a bit slow right now and I can't seem to find a probe and gauge for less than $200. Are the EGT gauges really that high?
