1959 4X4 restoration.

Can someone tell me what was the mastic like material that was originally placed between sheet metal parts like fenders? Is it special or can a generic product be used?

Butyl tape is tough to clean up, don't know how it will work with newly painted surfaces and chemicals to clean up. They used 3m strip caulk #08758 on the old body parts.
