1995 F250 Switching fuel tanks kills truck, but has gas?

Hey guys,
I have a 1995 F250 4x4, 460 gas, extended cab. The other day "old reliable" refused to start. After trying for a while to get it going it became obvious the engine was not getting fuel. I flipped the tank switch to the "rear tank" and it started right up. The tank that is not working is full of gas? Once I started truck I switched the tank back, just to see what happened, and it killed the the truck immediately. Also, don't know if this is related, but the temperature gauge quit working as well. Not sure if it was at the exact same time, but could have been...any thoughts

I think the pump in your front tank crapped out.

As for the temp gauge, try grounding the wire to the block and see if it reads then.
Senders can fail but it might be the wire or the gauge itself.
Always start with the simplest thing.

I don't think the two problems are related. For your temp gauge, check your fuses and maybe the coolant temp sending unit under the hood. As far as your fuel tanks, I have the same exact problem on my F150. I believe it is the low pressure fuel pump in the tank.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info. I just watched a video on replacing the pump in the tank and think I will take it to the shop.

Thanks again!

For some clarification your 88 at three pumps low pressure pump in each tank and a high pressure pump on the frame rail, the OP's truck has two pumps one in each tank both are high pressure.

On my '89 it was the diverter box ( drawing a blank right now on actual name ) where the lines from the two tanks come together. Mine was stuck and wouldn't allow fuel to flow from the rear tank.

F-series gas engine trucks went to the two pump system in 1990.

So these are Fuel Delivery Modules with a backflow check valve and there is no switch valve on the frame rail...
