The passenger side door on my 79 f150 does not shut properly. It shuts, but you have to slam it. Even then when driving down the road it vibrates like it's not fully shut.
What can I do/replace to fix this? My wife thinks she's going to fall out when I go around a corner.
Pauly,
You could have a couple of problems:
1. Are your hinges worn? Open the door and lift up on the end of the door. Is there noticeable play? Generally, its the top hinge.
Replace them if worn.
2. Do you have a cab seal in place? This is a piece of foam rubber that runs all the way around the door. If its missing, the door will rattle no matter how well you adjust it. Buy a new cab seal.
3. Does the door fit in the cab opening correctly? Close the door and inspect the crack all the way around. Is it even? Is the front of the door flush with the fender? This could be a hinge problem also.
4. Hang your door. I use a piece of short **** carpet to set the gap at the bottom of the door. Snug the hinge bolts and close the door. Bang the door with a rubber mallet to get it adjusted. Careful don't dent your door. After adjusting, carefully open door and tighten hinges. You may have to preload door. Ususally this is only necessary if your using worn hinges.
5. There is always the chance of a striker problem. These are unusual and I've never seen one on a 73-79 F series. inspect your striker and insure that a misadjusted door hasn't damaged it. I don't think you have a door fastener problem, do you? The door stays shut doesn't it?

The plastic piece of the striker bolt has probably broke and fallen off. This will cause you to have to slam the dorr to get it closed and it will stay shut just fine, but i'll rattle alot. I've had to replace them in all of my trucks, 4 so far. They're about $8 at any auto place that sells the HELP parts. It should just say ford dorr srtiker bolt. Good luck!
I agree with jcs17, check the striker bolt. Compare it to the other side. There should be a plastic sleeve. It's probably gray in color and easy to miss/overlook thinking it's actually part of the striker bolt itself. Try the easy stuff first!!!
