Ok. I have an Edl intake and Edl Perf 750cfm carb on my built 390ci. In the front I have two (one on the left and one on the right) vacuum ports. I'm supposed to hook one of them up to the vacuum advance on the dist BUT, I have the MSD billet dist w/o the vac. advance. Does this mean I can just block off both vacuum ports on the carb or should I be looking for vacuum elsewhere?
You can block off any un-needed ports. I'm not sure where or what the ports are on the edel carb though. I would use the intake port for the power brakes anyway.
As for the intake port, if I do that, then should I not use a PCV on valve cover? Currently, I have the passenger side PCV going to the carb and the power booster going to the driver side valve cover breather. Therefore, I would use just use a regular air breather on both valve covers?
i believe you want the pcv valve to go to a valve cover and the hose to the carb. in the other valve cover would be a breather of some kind, and the power brake booster should go to a fitting on the intake manifold for manifold vacuum.
Shouldn't the pvc go to the air cleaner?..Should be a hole in the base with a fitting, at least there is on mine..Then hook the brake booster to the carb..JMO..
Both the booster vac line and the pcv valve hose need to hook up to manifold vacuum(vacuum at idle), otherwise you won't get any pcv action or power assist. There should be enough vacuum hookups to accomplish this. A breather is needed in one valve cover and the pcv in the other, make sure there is a baffle under the pcv valve or you'll suck oil fumes into the carb. and it'll smoke a little. luvfordtrucks has it on the money!!
Thanks all for the info. One problem, the only manifold vacuum I have comes from the valve covers. The way I had it rigged before was PCV in the breather on the passenger side to the carb. Then, driver side breather to the break booster. I didn't notice any issues then, but that doesn't mean I had it right either.
Fordfan428, when I took the motor out of a 68 Galaxie, the PCV was in the breather on the passenger side valve cover. Going to car shows, I've seen other FE's with this same setup so I think there may be a few ways Ford had this set up. Sounds like we know of two ways so far.
I don't think there should be any vacuum at the valve covers. Manifold vacuum has to be below the throttle plates in the intake manifold. When the throttle blades are closed at idle the engine tries to suck more air past the blades than can pass creating a low pressure under the blades.
There should be a vacuum port in the intake for the brake booster line, prob have to remove a plug and install the right fitting.
The PCV should hook into the base of the carb.
