Brake Job - Calipers OK?
Hi All,
I did my front brakes tonight, and everything went pretty smoothly, however...
The passenger side caliper was pretty resistant to being pushed back in (I used a C clamp and one of the old brake pads). I finally did get it, but had to work at it (much more than on the drivers side). Though the wear on this side was a LOT worse than the drivers side, so there was more piston exposed in the first place.
I didn't go crazy on a test drive... I got it up to 10mph a few times then slowed to a roll, then 40mph a few times and slowed to a roll. Functionally everything seemed fine.
So I guess the question is: how would I know if there's a problem with that passenger side caliper? If it was sticking or otherwise not functioning properly, would I know it? Or would it be less obvious and burst into flames the next time I'm on a long trip or towing the camper?
Thanks!

Caliper NOT ok :)
So this morning I woke up and went for a little test drive... something definitely not right -- too much heat coming from that passenger side.
Went and got a new caliper, and when I took the old one off the piston was actually broken...
So with a brand new caliper and bracket, everything put back together and bled -- everything is smooth as silk.
LOVING the PowerStop vented rotors and ceramic pads.

My suspicion is that this same caliper had already been replaced, since the bolts that hold the caliper to the bracket were 16mm (instead of 13mm).
Although I have to say, there was NOTHING clean about the slides on mine... it looked like part of the Titanic wreckage. I had to use a vice and vice grips to remove the pins! The grease inside was solidified. I don't really understand what was going on in there -- never seen that before, but I'm sure glad to have a fresh shiny new one in place!
