Loud Noise With Tow/Haul Mode

How do you diagnose a bad fan clutch? When driving in tow/haul mode I get a noise like a jet engine. It starts going down grade or upgrade and does not stop after leveling out. I have switched off tow/haul and it is still there. Over on the Diesel Stop site I found a couple of guys who have had the same problem. Concern is everything I have read there are no codes thrown. Have not taken to my local Ford Dealer to see what they say.

Driving a 2011 F-250, August 2010 build date with 76,500 miles. Problem started about 6 weeks ago when pulling an 8000 lb travel trailer in the White Mountains of NH.

Occasionally there is a report of some people that the clutch fan doesn't release when it has cooled the motor down.

A quick dianositic can help to pin point it.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know how this problem is diagnosed? What I have read about the problem there are no codes thrown when it happens. In my case it was every time I was using tow/haul

You have to use the IDS system and cycle the fan.

Took truck to my local Ford dealer here in Florida. Explained to service writer the details of when and how this happens. She did a search of the Ford tech site and found nothing. She then talked to a diesel tech who told her this is normal. She gave me a couple of options: 1.) Pay to have the clutch replaced at cost of about $600. 2.)Leave truck and check for codes. 3.) Drive until it breaks.

The truck is F-250 6.7L purchased Oct 2010 and has a ford bumper to bumper 6 year 120,000 mile warranty. Current mileage 79,500 miles.

Frustrated

You have a bumper to bumper warranty and the dealer said you have to pay to replace a malfunctioning component? I would really be interested to hear the service manager's logic on that one.

Hey BigDaddy_2,

Let's ease this frustration. Please PM your full name, phone number, VIN, and the name of your Ford Dealer; I'm on this.

Not Normal

I had the fan clutch replaced on the 6.0. My 2012 rarely engages the fan clutch. The tech did not even look at the truck.

Try another dealer fast.

I hate it when the dealer says no CEL no problem... Can't tell you how much I have heard this.

My 2011 was the same with the fan clutch rarely engaging. It was a sudden change when it happened about 2 months ago when I was using tow/haul in the mountains and suddenly "what the heck is that noise." Since I live in central Florida not many mountains to demo the problem for tech.

Good evening donovan,

Are you also experiencing a concern with your ride? Send over the mileage and preferred Ford Dealer; I'll see how to best assist.

1) Inspect fan clutch for leakage, look at blades and shroud to see if its throwing any silicon fluid.

2) Don't see any the see if you can turn your fan. It should move like it being turn in a thick liquid, if it spins then the liquid has all leached out

Sometimes if you are leaking fluid it will begin to lock up too soon and you hear the jet engine sound.

Keep an eye on your temp gauge...
