EGR valve, which way to I install the egr?. installed on exhaust side or intake? 78 f150 351m

My egr valve is dead on my 78 f150 with a 351m. when I remover the egr plate the first thing I noticed is someone put a solid gasket that blocked the egr passage. so I made a new gasket but here is what my question is about. I can flip the valve and it will install with the plunger blocking the exhaust side or flip it the other way and it blocks the intake side of the egr plate....does it matter?....the passages are connected when the valve is open ...but maybe it matters which way I install it??..any help would be great..thanks

It's raining now otherwise I'd go look. But, if I remember the EGR will only go on one way (different size bolt holes).

I think the correct washer is size 24. from the chart..that is for ID number D8TE-9D475-A1A or A2A / Ford part number = D8TZ-9D475-A
Wrong part number, this is for an 1978 F350 351M/400 CA emission.
E3PZ-9D448-B (replaced D8OZ-9D448-B).. EGR Valve (Motorcraft CX-914-A) / Marked: D8OE-9D448-B1A or B2A or B3A / Obsolete

1978 F100/150/250 351M CA emission with A/T
------------------------------------------------------
D8TZ-9D448-P .. EGR Valve (Motorcraft CX-271) / Marked: D8TE-9D448-P1A or P2A or P3A

1978 F150/250 351M CA emission with M/T

Upper/Lower pics: Here's the Ford truck parts catalog 9D448 application charts where I found these 2 part numbers:

thanks very much nummberdummy but the number I gave you, the D8Te-9D475 is not on the valve ..I got it online at bubbas site but what confuses me is the site also says that d9te-9d475 was also used on a california 78 ford f150 with 351m....and on my eger valve chart those two numbers use much different orifice sizes....so I was hoping you could help me determine the correct egr number with the vin code etc...dont use the muber I gave you...its not from the old valve and I might be completely wrong!!

After I looked up the D8TZ-9D475-A part number, I found it's INCORRECT for your truck.

I'm working on the correct valve, see post 6 in a coupla minutes.

Post 6, I just edited in the pics of the truck parts catalog application charts for the 2 valves I listed.

Where in CA do you live?

TWO completely different types of EGR valves and mounting gaskets.

Post 6 has the parts catalog chart for the 9D448 valves. This valve is a different shape and uses a different mounting gasket than the 9D475 valves.

You listed ID number D8TE-9D475 which cross references to Ford part number D8TZ-9D475-A

Here's the 9D475 EGR application chart for 1978. Do you see a D8TZ-9D475-A valve for your application? There are 5 listed, but NONE are correct for your application.

I don't give a hoot what Bubba says, whoever the hell he is.

I listed TWO part numbers in post 6: 1978 F150 351M with CA emission. One is for A/T the other is for M/T

If you had mentioned which trans your truck has, I would have only listed one part number.

I also listed the truck parts application charts (post 6 and post 11), read thru them, see what number you come up with.

If you're still confused, email me your phone number: sylhall@aol.com
