Help me pick which tires to get. I'm split....

I'm in the market for new tires in the 31x10.50R15 size. My search criteria is pretty simple, all-terrain or aggressive highway tread, and made in the USA...

I've narrowed it down to The new BFG all terrain KO2
http://m.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-se...ils?frompc=yes

, or the cooper discoverer A/T3.
http://us.coopertire.com/Tires/Light...ERER-A-T3.aspx

Both tires have great reviews, and have a similar price tag. (BFG a few bucks more)

What do I need from my tires? Same as we all do! Strong sidewalls for towing and hauling, good road manners but enough grip to not get stuck when I go off road. (Mostly sand, rock and dirt here, with the occasional mud/snow fun) and I want them to run for at least 50,000 miles. (Shouldn't be a problem for any tire)

Anybody have anything to say about either one? I'm split on which way to go, but I'm done buying Chinese rubber crap...

Eh, Noise doesn't really matter to me. Big exhaust, Wind noise, and the radio usually drown everything else out.

BUT! Lower noise could mean lower rolling resistance, and that's good for mpg's.

I've had 33 x 12.50 BFG AT KO's on my Jeep for about 7 years now. They are about worn out, but I have been very happy with them! Very little road noise, and very good grip offroad, especially when aired down to about 10 psi. Not the greatest in mud, but I hate mud!

And that's another reason why I like the BFG's. The all-terrain KO is a legend in its own time. Tried and true, tested and proven to perform well everywhere.

Hard to improve on that, but they say they did with the new KO2, and so far everybody else is saying they did too.

I guess that you know already most Cooper tires are made by Kelly-Springfield. Which is part of Goodyear. They use to build them at the plant in Fayetteville, NC

I have mixed feelings about Goodyear tires. I have a pair on the truck now, they are OK but not the greatest.

BFGoodrich Tires have always served my dad and I well, it's what we put on our flatbed trailer and his Ranger. If they made the commercial T/A in a 31, I would be buying those.

But, I've seen a lot of the Cooper's on trucks and they seem to hold up well. And I like the look and tread pattern of them.

Just read an article that compared a bunch of the all terrain offerings. The BFG and the Cooper were included in testing, which was pretty involved.

Out of all of them, they picked the Cooper as the hands down winner.

Interesting....

The BFG's hands down Garrett. 1st because my brother has and is running them on his Chebbie Avalanche. Got 60,000 (mostly expressway) miles on the 1st set. The current set has over 70,000 and still counting. 2ND, guess what comes on THE RAPTORS?

Cooper tires are made by Cooper Tire. They may have contracted some of them to Kelly-Springfield. Cooper is a direct competitor to Kelly-Springfield. I worked for Kelly-Springfield/Goodyear tire plant in Tyler, Texas for 13 years. We made all sorts of private label tires,Kelly, Goodyears, Dunlops, Sumitomo, Remington, Falken, Douglas, Marathon etc. Cooper has their own manufacturing plants. One in Texarkana, Tx. Goodyear owns Kelly-Springfield, Dunlop, Sumitomo, and contracts the others for retailers.

I've got a set of the BFG KO2's on my daily driver and I like'm, but don't do any hardcore off-roading with it. I got them because the original KO's are no longer available up here (Northern Ontario), and the new rubber compound is supposed to be better for winter driving. My tires are 265/75/16's 10ply, and I noticed that if the roads have any snow/ slush on them, the front end of my truck really squirms around. I think it may just be a case of a wide tire floating a bit though, not really the tires fault.

Have you thought about Mickey Thompson ATZ's? My buddy put them on his truck, and I must say I was very impressed with how they performed off-road.

Just my 0.02. Tire shopping is exciting!

Mickey Thompson is a great tire, and it costs about double what the coopers and BFGs do. No way in heck I can afford that!

$400 for two tires is gonna be a knock on my finances as it is...

Just my 2¢ worth on the Mickey Thompson's, my tire guy got a heckuva deal on I think the same tires and He was also impressed with them until he had 5-6000 miles on them and noticed a surprising amount of tread wear. The last time I talked to him that they were down to almost slicks and only had 18,000 Miles on them and he was not at all impressed and really didn't have anything nice to say about them.
I've never bought or owned a Mickey Thompson tire but they do look cool.
